Upper Des Moines Meeting Challenge Of Tripled Demand For Food Pantry

Primghar, Iowa — As pandemic aid ends and SNAP benefits fall, more and more people are finding themselves in need of food. And Upper Des Moines Opportunity in Primghar has improved its food pantry to help. But they could always use your help, as they tell us the food goes fast.

Director Courtney Strub of Upper Des Moines’ Primghar office tells us they have seen a large increase in the number of people requesting assistance. But the days of only receiving food donated by the community are passed.

She tells us when she says they “partner” with grocery stores, that means that instead of throwing away food that’s no longer in perfect condition, the stores donate it to the Upper Des Moines food pantry.

Strub tells us the food pantry is open to anyone.

She says they have also been getting some food from another source.

According to Strub, they also continue to receive both monetary and food donations from the community. She tells us that gone are the days when they only had non-perishable food items like canned goods. She says they’re able to offer much more now.

Strub details their current needs.
