VNU/Sheldon And City Of Hawarden Receive Over $800,000

Northwest Iowa — Two northwest Iowa communities were recently advised that they had received Community Development Block Grants (CDBGs) for projects in their communities.

The City of Sheldon was the pass-through recipient of one of the grants, which was destined for Village Northwest Unlimited in Sheldon. The Village’s CEO, Barry Whitsell, tells us about it.

The grant was written by the Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Commission.

Also announced this week was a grant for the community of Hawarden. The Iowa Economic Development Authority or IEDA says that these funds enable communities to improve housing conditions for low-income homeowners, provide facilities for at-risk individuals and make transformative improvements to their downtowns.

The grant received by Hawarden was in the amount of $207,084 toward their project.

The IEDA says the grants are awarded based on benefit to low- and moderate-income persons, slum and blight elimination, financial need, project impact and readiness, and commitment of local resources to the project.

The Community Development Block Grant program is federally-funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). IEDA is responsible for administering the block grant funds in the non-metropolitan areas of the state. Applications are solicited annually, usually in the spring.
