Barn Destroyed In Fire Near Alton

Alton, Iowa — A barn was destroyed in a fire on Thursday, January 30, 2025, near Alton.

According to Alton Fire Assistant Chief Kevin Langel, at about 4:00 p.m., the Alton Fire Department was called to the report of a barn roof on fire at 5060 Jefferson Avenue, four and a half miles almost due south of Alton.

The chief says the fire department saw the barn fully engulfed as they approached the scene. He says since the barn was fully engulfed, their focus was on protecting the other property on the place.

Assistant Chief Langel says no injuries were reported.

The fire department was assisted by the Orange City, Remsen, and Granville fire departments and the Alton Ambulance Squad.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be sparks from a brush pile, which was burned a day or two earlier.

Assistant Chief Langel reports that the older two-story barn was totaled. He says the livestock had been let out of the building before the fire got too bad.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about three hours.
