Barn, Truck Damaged In Sioux Center Fires

Sioux Center, Iowa — A barn was damaged in a fire on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, near Sioux Center.

According to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland, at about 10:30 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of a barn fire at 4251 Highway 75, about a mile south of Sioux Center, just south of Perdue Sioux Preme Packing.

The chief says the fire department saw lots of smoke as they approached the scene. He says they used water to fight the fire and ventilated the building with fans.

Van Holland says no injuries were reported. There was livestock in the building but they were not hurt.

The fire department was assisted by Ireton firefighters per their auto-aid agreement.

He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction in the heater.

Chief Van Holland reports that damage was limited to the heater and some paneling.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for an hour to an hour and a half.

That was actually their second call that day, as they responded to a false alarm call earlier that morning. Then, that evening they responded to a third call.

Van Holland says something must have gone wrong with the brakes on a straight grain truck hauling grain, because the brakes stuck on when the truck was on Highway 75 near the Four Brothers Restaurant at about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday night.

He says they arrived to find smoke and heat, but no flames. They cooled the brakes with water. He says damage was limited to the brakes and wheels, and the grain box was still okay. Firefighters were on that scene for about a half an hour.
