Bill Would Allow Five More Medical Marijuana Dispensaries In Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa — There’s a revived attempt in the Iowa Senate to double the number of medical cannabis dispensaries in Iowa.

There are currently five state-licensed dispensaries. A bill to allow five more passed the Senate last year. This week, the same bill cleared a Senate subcommittee. Leslie Carpenter, co-founder of the Iowa Mental Health Advocacy organization, says the group opposes the legalization of marijuana, but fully supports medical marijuana.

Dane Schumann is a lobbyist for “Bud and Mary’s Cannabis Company,” which operates dispensaries in Sioux City and Windsor Heights.

A bill scheduled for a hearing next week would let Iowa dispensaries sell dried raw cannabis that can be vaporized. Bill backers say it costs less to produce and having a cheaper product to sell would likely expand the number of Iowans who sign up for the state’s medical cannabis program.
