Original story from April 14, 2025:
Inwood, Iowa — A Canton, SD man has been arrested on a warrant for burglary-related charges after an incident in Inwood.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Lyon County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 30-year-old Bernard Wiley III of Canton is accused of entering a home in which he did not belong and assaulting a victim. He was arrested on Friday.
In his statement, the deputy says Wiley and others went to the victim’s home on the morning of March 15th and entered the home without permission. He says Wiley assaulted the victim while the victim was in the victim’s car, by prodding him in the face and body with baseball bats and by punching him in the head with their hands, saying he owed them money. The deputy says the alleged assailants took the victim’s wallet and caused damage to the vehicle the victim was in by breaking a window with a baseball bat and breaking a door handle. The victim was able to drive away and contacted law enforcement. The alleged assailants were stopped in South Dakota. Officers there arrested the subjects, and during their investigation, the victim’s wallet was recovered, along with the broken door handle of the victim’s vehicle, according to the deputy.
Wiley was charged with second-degree burglary, a class C felony. If convicted, he could face up to ten years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and assault while displaying a dangerous weapon.
He faces a preliminary hearing on the charges on April 22nd.
At last report, Wiley remained in the Lyon County Jail in Rock Rapids in lieu of a $10,000 bond.
