Fire Destroys Spencer Home

Spencer, Iowa – Fire destroyed a home in Spencer on Saturday.

The Spencer Fire Department was called around 10:20 am to what initially was reported as a porch that was on fire at 517 9th Avenue West. The fire quickly spread to the rest of the house and a pickup, and was reportedly threatening another house to the south. Additional units from the Spencer Fire Department arrived on the scene and the Everly Fire Department was called for assistance.

The owner was home at the time and managed to get out unharmed. Two pets died in the fire.

Both the house and pickup were destroyed.

The cause was determined to be improperly discarded cigarettes in the trash.

Firefighters were on the scene nearly two and a half hours.

The Spencer Police Department, Spencer Hospital paramedics, and Spencer Municipal Utilities assisted on the scene.
