Melvin, Iowa — A field was burned in a fire on Thursday, October 17, 2024, near Melvin.
According to Melvin Fire Chief Brennan Raveling, at about 2:00 p.m., the Melvin Fire Department was called to the report of a beanfield fire near 2040 Taft Avenue, two miles east and four and a half north of Melvin.
The chief says the fire department saw the fire was almost out as they approached the scene. He says they used water to help fight the fire, which a farmer with a disk already had contained.
Raveling says injuries were reported.
The fire department was assisted by the Ocheyedan Fire Department.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a hot bearing on a combine.
Chief Raveling reports that about 20 acres of stubble burned.
He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
