Latest Drought Monitor Shows Drought Conditions Have Appeared In Northwest Iowa

Lincoln, Nebraska — The latest report from the US Drought Monitor showed a slight improvement in south-central Iowa with six percent of Iowa showing no dry conditions. But drought has appeared in northwest Iowa.

DNR hydrologist Tim Hall says most of the state is listed as “abnormally dry,” or just before the drought level.

Some areas in far northwest and western Iowa have moderate drought. Hall says the dry weather can be an asset to farmers right now.

Hall says it would not be good to go much longer without some rainfall.

Hall says rain naturally drops off as we head through fall and into winter, so making up the gap from the dry September may not be easy.

Last week there was only a thin sliver of what the Drought Monitor calls “moderate drought” way in the far northern reaches of Lyon County. Now, “moderate drought” covers all of Lyon and Osceola counties and the northwest third of Dickinson County. The rest of our area is merely listed as “abnormally dry.”
