Officials Unsure On Cause Of Rock Rapids Ditch Fires

Rock Rapids, Iowa — The Rock Rapids Fire Department was called out on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 for a couple of ditch fires that are kind of a mystery.

According to Rock Rapids Assistant Chief Eric Borman, shortly before 1:00 p.m., the Rock Rapids Fire Department was called to the report of ditch fires south of town on Highway 75.

The chief says the fire department saw two separate ditch fires as they approached the scene. He says they extinguished the fires, which were about 300 to 400 feet long.

Assistant Chief Borman says no injuries were reported, but the cause of the fires remain sort of a mystery. He says a couple of guesses might be sparking equipment going down the road, or even a cigarette, but the fact that there were two separate fires makes that a little less likely.

Assistant Chief Borman reports that only the ditch grass was damaged.

He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 15 minutes.
