Overheated Fireplace Ignites Firewood Pile, Fills Sioux Center Home With Smoke Overnight

Sioux Center, Iowa — Two fire departments were called out early on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, for a call near Sioux Center.

According to Sioux Center Fire Chief David Van Holland, at about 2:25 a.m., the Sioux Center Fire Department was called to the report of a house full of smoke at 3112 430th Street, about a mile south of Sioux Center.

The chief says when they arrived, law enforcement was making sure everyone and their pets were out of the home, and there was thick smoke in the house. Van Holland says no injuries were reported.

They found the cast iron fireplace had gotten so hot that it had started the nearby firewood pile smoldering. He says they took the fuel out of the fireplace and doused it and the firewood with water.

Van Holland tells us Sioux Center firefighters were assisted by Ireton Fire Department per their auto aid agreement.

Chief Van Holland reports that there was smoke and a little water damage.
