Primghar, Iowa– Runaways from Sioux City were found after a crash near Primghar on Saturday, November 23, 2024.
The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 3:40 a.m., 15-year-old Trey Young of Sioux City was driving a 2016 Kia northbound on Redwing Avenue, three miles west and two north of Primghar.
The report says that Young stated that they were rear-ended and the impact sent them into the west field and the other vehicle fled the scene. However, upon investigation, the deputy could find no evidence that a second vehicle had been involved. The deputy says there was no debris in the roadway indicating an impact happened. There were no skid marks or any physical evidence that supports the driver’s claim that he was rear-ended. The deputy says that it appears the vehicle drifted into the southbound lane and exited the roadway. Tire tracks on the gravel shoulder and the ditch show the vehicle traveled down in the ditch on a northwest heading, crossed over a small water ravine, up the opposite side of the ditch and continued approximately 200-300 feet out into an empty field.
The deputy says that Young had also been entered as a missing person. The deputy says further investigation suggests that Young and his two friends had run away from Sioux City and no parent was aware of their whereabouts in O’Brien County. The driver further had no permission to operate the vehicle he was in.
A passenger in the vehicle, 15-year-old Ian Lopez was taken to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by Primghar Ambulance.
The Kia sustained $5000 in damages.
Young was charged with violation of a minor’s restricted license.
