Sheldon, Iowa — The Sheldon City Council will meet in special session for the annual property tax hearing at 4:15 p.m. this Wednesday afternoon in the council chambers at the Sheldon Community Services Center across 9th Street from KIWA Radio.
According to Sheldon City Manager Sam Kooiker, this meeting is for the sole purpose of the hearing on the Property Tax Levy. Per State Code, no action will be taken on the levy, and no other items are allowed on the agenda. The council’s regular meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. (or after this hearing is complete).
The public hearing will be the public’s chance to talk about the proposed budget. The proposed regular tax rate is about 15.28 percent. For more information, you can contact the city office.
As far as the regular meeting, on their consent agenda are minutes from the last council meeting, the list of claims, the acceptance of the resignation of Recreation Director Trevor Cast, pay application number one for Western Avenue, a resolution approving a temporary revocable license from Iowa Army National Guard for the Western Avenue project, the approval of the hiring of Matt Burrington as a water operator, the approval of a beer permit for Dollar General and a liquor license for Stammer Liquor, the offering of a full-time police officer position to Jager Roozeboom, a resolution temporarily creating a full-time police officer position, and the acceptance of the resignation of full-time Sheldon Community Ambulance Team member Dianne Wolthuizen (who will stay on as a volunteer EMT). The council will vote on all of these with a single vote unless a member requests an item to be voted on separately.
In old business, the council will revisit the tobacco license for Highway Liquor and Smoke Shop.
In new business, they will vote on whether to set April 16 as a public hearing date for the full budget adoption, and whether to re-appoint and establish compensation for City Attorney Micah Schreurs.
The budget hearing starts at 4:15, and the regular meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. in the council chambers and is available on YouTube.
