On April 20, 2012, after a sudden, brief illness (our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother), Arlyna Vande Griend went home to be with her heavenly Father (Lord and Savior).

Arlyna Harriet was born on December 28, 1926, the daughter of Adrian and Aartje (Mouw) Scholten. She grew up in Hull, and on September 25, 1947 she married Henry James Vande Griend.

Arlyna and Henry moved to their farm southeast of Hull, where Arlyna enjoyed homemaking, taking care of her family, working on the farm, gardening, and watching goldfinches and other birds. She also enjoyed travelling to visit her many relatives and friends. Arlyna continued to enjoy farm life, even after Henry passed away in 1993, until just 10 days before God took her home.

Arlyna is survived by four children and their spouses, Larry and Marina Vande Griend of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; Linda and Wilson Brouwer of Raymond, Minnesota,; David and Betty Vande Griend of Hull; and Jason and Jennifer Vande Griend of George; a son-in-law, Eugene McCarty of Hartley; nineteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Zandstra of Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Vande Griend of Hull.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly McCarty; and three brothers and seven sisters, Jennie Berkenpas, Pauline Bliek, John Scholten, Cornelia Berkenpas, Morris Scholten, Hendrika Reyelts, Adrian Scholten, Arta Collins, Marie Sneller, and Marie Scholten.
