Emilee Danner netted a career-high 32 points but Northwestern came up short in its GPAC opener, falling to Concordia 83-72 in Seward, Neb. Northwestern drops to 0-4 this season; Concordia improves to 1-3.
Danner made 7-of-11 three-point attempts, also a career-best, en route to the 32-point effort. Both Sammy Blum and Molly Schany scored 10 points each, giving Head Coach Chris Yaw’s squad three players in double figures. Schany grabbed 11 rebounds, giving the freshman her first double-double.
Scoring runs by the Bulldogs at the end of the first and second quarters put the hosts in front by 19, 45-26, at halftime. Northwestern struggled from the field in the first half, shooting 30%, compared to 43% by Concordia.
A three-pointer from Concordia guard Faith Troshynski gave the Raiders their largest deficit, 48-26, at the beginning of the third quarter. Northwestern, however, came back with a barrage of three-pointers, two by both Danner and Blum and one by Kemble, to bring the deficit down to eight (61-53) with two minutes left in the quarter. Concordia extended its lead back to 15 by quarters end, 68-53, scoring the final seven points.
Danner brought Northwestern back once again in the fourth quarte as the Raiders trailed by just five after her third and final three-pointer in a three-minute span, followed by a basket by Taylor VanderVelde, made the score 72-67, with under five minutes left. The Raiders would not get any closer as Concordia closed with an 11-5 run to earn the win.
Northwestern shot 38% from the field and from beyond the arc, making 12/32 three-pointers. They held a big edge on the glass, outrebounding Concordia 51-35.
Taylor Cockerill led Concordia with 25 points, one of three Bulldog players to score in double figures.
