Defenders Take 1st In Eight Events At GPAC Track And Field Championships

Seward, Nebraska — The Dordt Defender men’s track and field team totaled 137 points and finished second in the team standings. The Dordt women’s track and field team finished third at the GPAC Track and Field Championships in Seward, Nebraska on Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1.

Dordt’s best finishes came in the 4×400 and 4×800 relays where the Defenders took victories.

Nic Veldhorst won the steeplechase title and Matthew Van Eps was an individual double winner with victories in the 1500 and the 800.

Dordt will take athletes to a meet hosted by USD on Friday, May 7 and the Defenders will run in the Concordia Twilight on May 14 in the final tune-up before the NAIA National Championship at Gulf Shores, Alabama May 26-28.

Doane won the team title with 235.5 points and Northwestern finished in third with 106.5 points in the 11 team field.

The Defenders totaled 137 points in the 11 team field and were led by Emma Bakker’s win in the 400 and Jessica Kampman claimed first in the steeplechase. Cassie Brandsma was a winner in the high jump after clearing 5-7.75 and she met the provisional standard for NAIA qualification with the jump. Anmarie Stuit also hit the provisional standard in the 400 meter hurdles where she finished third in 1:03.94.
