Dordt Baseball Splits With Midland Saturday

Sioux Center, Iowa — A complete game pitching performance by Gyeongju Kim helped the Dordt Defenders to a 3-0 pitcher’s duel win on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center. The win was Dordt’s first of the young GPAC season.

The Defenders got on the board in the first inning with a Nolan Christiansen single and Luke November followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Chase Edwards grounded out to the right side to get a run in and Dordt’s second run came in on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.

Midland had a runner on base in each of the first six innings but Kim was able to work around trouble and got a run for insurance in the sixth inning on a Chase Edwards single that got Christiansen in.

Kim worked a one-two-three seventh inning to preserve the shutout.

Kim walked one and struck out seven and scattered four hits and hit two batters.

Both teams had four this and November’s double was the only extra base hit for Dordt.

Logan Cline, Christiansen, November and Edwards all accounted for one hit each.

After earning a shutout win in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader, Dordt fell to Midland to finish the day with a split.

Logan Horne pitched three shutout innings to begin the game, also working out of having two runners in scoring position in the 2nd. Midland broke through in the 4th, however, as Bakari Gayle hit a 2-RBI single, one of his three hits on the day. Then, with the score 3-0, Kyle Weber hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring in the runner from third.

Dordt found themselves with a runner on second in the bottom of the 5th, looking to cut into their deficit. Oliver Walczak hit a single to the right field fence and then advanced on a wild pitch. Midland’s Luke Hamzeh worked out of trouble on the mound to keep the Defenders scoreless.

The Warriors broke the game open in the 7th, scoring seven runs on four hits and three errors in the inning.

It was the 16th win of the year for Midland, who moved their record to 16-3. Dordt ends the weekend with a record of 5-14.

Logan Cline hit 1-3 with a double

Aaron Eshelman recorded a hit in two at-bats

Midland’s Bakari Gayle went 3-4 with 4 RBI

Dordt is scheduled to play again at home on Thursday, March 24 versus Briar Cliff.
