The Dordt Defender women’s basketball team will travel to Madison, South Dakota to face Dakota State in the season opener for the Defenders on Tuesday, November 3. The game will start at 5:30.
Dakota State is 0-1 this season after a 72-62 loss to Grand View on Saturday. In that game the Lady Ts fell behind 22-11 after one quarter but battled back to within one before settling for a three-point deficit at halftime. The third quarter lead grew to double digits and shrank to four before the fourth quarter was played almost entirely in a double digit difference with Grand View controlling.
Dakota State was 23-56 from the field and 6-19 from the three-point line and held a 36-35 rebounding edge. Dakota State committed 25 turnovers while forcing 17. Elsie Aslesen scored 15 with six rebounds and Jessi Giles had 14 points. Courtney Menning added nine points and Shaylee De Beer had seven.
Last year’s Dakota State team was 17-14 overall and finished 10-4 in the North Star Athletic Association. Giles scored 13.6 points per game and Morgan Koepsell added 13.1 points with 6.8 rebounds. Savannah Walsdorf scored 11.6 points per game and grabbed 6.5 rebounds. All three return for this year’s team. Dakota State outscored teams last year 79.7-72.1.
This is the season opener for the Defenders after posting a 24-8 record last year and a 15-7 GPAC mark.
Erika Feenstra led last year’s team with 17.6 points per game and 5.9 rebounds. Karly Gustafson scored 9.8 points per game and led the team with 6.5 rebounds per game. Bailey Beckman and Jordyn Winterfeld scored 7.6 and 6.3 points per game for a team that averaged 80.3 points per game while giving up 66.8. Dordt also returns Mya Chmielewski and Bailey Tetzlaff with 5.9 and 5.3 points per game respectively.
The Defenders converted 46.1 percent of their field goal attempts while holding teams to 38.2 percent success. Dordt also outrebounded teas 42.8-33.1
Dordt is scheduled to face Grand View and Sterling at the Northwestern Classic in Orange City on Friday and Saturday, November 6 and 7. The Friday game is at 2:00 and the Saturday contest will be at noon.
