Five Raiders Run Personal Bests At Drake Relays

Des Moines, Iowa — Dylan Hendricks met the provisional mark in the 5K and the 4×100 relay advanced to Saturday’s final to highlight the first day of competition for the Northwestern men’s track and field team at the Drake Relays.

Hendricks finished 11th out of 22 runners, third among NAIA competitors, with a personal best time of 14:56, good for second best in the conference and 25th in the NAIA.

The Raiders 4×100 relay, who last week met the auto mark and qualified for nationals, turned in the seventh fastest time in today’s prelim (41.87) to earn a spot in Saturday’s final. The team of Daniel Strand, Cody Post, Braden Jahn and James Gilbert Jr. had the fastest time among NAIA teams today and is currently ranked first in the GPAC.

Northwestern’s 4×800 relay crossed the finish line in seventh place with a season-best time of 7:56, 10 seconds faster than their previous best. Relay members include Avery Pater, Isaiah Lee, Drew Van Hauen and Joshua Van Dusseldorp.

Carter Behler was the final Northwestern men’s athlete to record a top 10 finish, placing 10th the javelin (47.48).

A limited number of Raiders also competed in the Kip Janvrin Open later in the day, held on the campus of Simpson College.

Two Northwestern runners, Ian Wiersma and Nick Bernhagen, ran personal bests in their respective events. Wiersma crossed the finish line in the 1500m with a time of 4:12; Bernhagen ran the sixth best time in the GPAC this season, finishing in 15:35.

Both Wyatt Pryor (8th – 400m: 50.3) and Isaiah Lee (10th – 800m: 1:57) had top 10 finishes.

Hunter Koepke ran a personal best in the 5K and Allison Birks, Caitlin Ostbye and Devyn Kemble finished among the top 10 in their respective events on day one of the Drake Relays and Kin Janvrin Open.

Koepke ran a personal best time of 17:58 in today’s 5K at Drake, shattering her previous best by 40 seconds, and currently the second fastest time in the GPAC.

Birks placed eighth in the long jump (5.2m), best among the NAIA athletes competing. Ostbye placed 10th in the 100m (12.96), second fastest among the NAIA athletes.

Later in the day at the Kip Janvrin Open, Kemble crossed the finish line in sixth place in the 400m (1:02.4) and Natalie Lausen ran a personal best in the 100m (13.27).

Northwestern will continue to compete at the Drake Relays on Saturday.
