Mustangs Use 6 Run Fifth Inning To Post Softball Win At Sheldon

Sheldon Iowa — George Little Rock Central Lyon erupted for 6 runs in the 5th inning as they earned a 9-7 win at Sheldon Tuesday night.

The two teams traded runs in the early innings as Sheldon took a 3-2 lead into the fifth inning. The Mustangs scored first in the top of the first inning as lead off hitter Kayla Gerken was hit by a pitch and would eventually score the games first run on a bases loaded walk. Sheldon answered in the bottom of the first as Nicole Meyer reached on a single and scored from third on a wild pitch.

Sheldon took a 2-0 lead in the second when Payton Lode walked and scored from third on an error. The Mustangs tied the game in the top of the third inning as Hayden Heimensen singled and scored from third on a wild pitch. In the bottom of the inning Sheldon was back in front 3-2 as Mikayla Simonson walked and scored from third on a wild pitch.

The Mustangs broke the game open with a 6 run 5th inning as they moved in front 8-3. They key hits were back to back 2-run singles by Heimensen and Keily Metzgar.  Sheldon got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Nicole Meyer singled and came in to score on a wild pitch.

G-LR-CL got an insurance run in the top of the 6th as Brooklyn Krull walked and eventually scored on a Machealla Johnson single to right field.

Sheldon rallied to score 3 runs in the bottom of the seventh as Makenna Kleinhesselink, Michayla Simonson and Madison Van Meeteren  all reached and scored. The first two runs were unearned with the final run crossing the plate on an rbi single to center off the bat of Payton Lode. The final score had the Mustangs winning it 9-7.

Madilyn Matuska got the complete game win. She gave up 4 hits and struck out 6. Emma Weber took the loss for Sheldon striking out 6 and gave up 6 hits.  With the win the Mustangs are 3-0 on the year and 2-0 in the conference. Sheldon is 0-2 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

Both teams are in action on Wednesday with Sheldon on the road to Okoboji while the Mustangs will be at Boyden Hull Rock Valley.
