Nighthawks Down Orabs in Siouxland Conference Softball

Sheldon Iowa — A four run 7th inning gave Boyden Hull Rock Valley an 11-7 win over Sheldon in a Siouxland Conference match up in Sheldon Tuesday night.

The Nighthawks took an early 2-0 lead with a 2 run first inning as Charli Bomgaars reached on an error and later scored on an error. Brooke Zylstra followed with a single and scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Marissa Pottebaum.

Sheldon took a 3-2 lead with a 3-run first as Emma Barwick, Madison Van Meeteren and Kourtney Dekker all reached and score. The big hit was a 2-run single by Payton Lode.

BHRV made it 5-3 with 3 runs in the top of the third. Jewell Bergstrom, Jenny Luevano and Ellie Woelber all reached and scored. The key hit was a 2-run single by Gabi Luevano.

Sheldon tied it at 5-5 in the home half of the third as Barwick and Maliah Kleinhesselink reached and scored.

The Nighthawks put a pair on the board to go up 7-5 in the top of the fourth as Lizzy Blum and Zylstra reached and scored. Zylstra scored Blum with an rbi double. Zylstra crossed the plate on an rbi single by Emma Zoet.

Sheldon got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Makenna Kleinhesselink singled and later scored on an rbi single by Barwick to cut the lead to 7-6.

Sheldon tied the game at 7-7 with another run in the bottom of the 6th as Makenna  Kleinhesselink reached stole second and advanced to third on an error and came in to score when a third strike got to the backstop and the Nighthawks went for the runner from third rather than the throw down to first base.

The Nighthawks put the game away with a four run 7th as Jenny Luevano led off with a walk and Gabi Luevano reached on an error. Jenny scored on an error. Gabi scored on Lizzy Blum’s rbi double. Bomgaars followed Blum with a walk and both scored on a 2-run double by Zylstra.

Blum went the distance to get the win. She gave up 7 runs on 8 hits and struck out 8. Kourtney Dekker took the loss in relief of Emma Weber going 6 innings giving up 9 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5.

After the second game of the season both teams are 1-1 in the conference and for the year. Sheldon returns to action Friday night hosting West Lyon. BHRV is back on the diamond on Thursday hosting Western Christian.
