Nighthawks Grind Out Another Win

Hull, Iowa — Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley used 4 takeaways and a powerful run game to come away with the 28-14 win over Storm Lake, and part of the Class 3A District 1 championship with the help of Spencer’s win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

The Nighthawks took the opening drive down the field, and Kody Noble finished it off with a 19 yard touchdown run, making it 7-0 BHRV with just over 9 minutes to go in the first quarter. Storm Lake responded with a drive of their own, when Josh Steffen found Jamuo Gatwech for the 22 yard touchdown reception, knotting the score up at 7-7 midway through the first quarter. The Nighthawks then took their following possession down the field. Facing a 4th down, Caleb Kats found Cody Vander Zwaag in the endzone for the 30 yard touchdown reception to give the Nighthawks the lead at 14-7 late in the first.

Midway through the second quarter, Brock Fisher intercepted a screen pass and took it to paydirt to give the Nighthawks a 21-7 lead. Storm Lake threatened to score before the half deep in BHRV territory, but ran out of time.

Storm Lake opened the second half with a 4:09 long drive, capped off with a 5 yard Jesus Soto touchdown run to bring the Tornadoes within 21-14 with 7:51 left in the 3rd quarter. The Nighthawk offense couldn’t find a rhythm for most of the second half, but the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley defense forced a turnover-on-downs after a failed Tornado fake punt, and forced three fumbles to keep Storm Lake out of the endzone.

The Nighthawks were able to get some much needed breathing room with 3:07 to go in the game when Noble found paydirt again from 12 yards out, and the Nighthawks came away victorious 28-14.

With the win, BHRV improves to 5-2 on the year, and 4-1 in district play. Storm Lake falls to 2-5 on the season and 2-3 in the district.

BHRV ends the regular season in a three way tie for first in Class 3A District 1, with Spencer and Sergeant Bluff-Luton. The Nighthawks await who their opponent will be, but if they host their first game, it will be played in Rock Valley.
