Northwestern Blanks Doane for Homecoming Victory

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College football team (4-0, 3-0 GPAC) picked up their first shutout of the season with a 38-0 victory over the Doane University Tigers (1-2, 1-2 GPAC) on Homecoming at De Valois Stadium this afternoon behind 266 passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Blake Fryar (Waukee, Iowa/Van Meter).

Northwestern pitched a shutout for the first time since November 23, 2020 when the Raiders blanked Jamestown 49-0.

The offense eruption of nearly 500 yards of offense and all four touchdown passes to Cade Moser (Sr., Rock Valley, Iowa/Rock Valley Community) ties a single-game record for most receiving touchdowns in a game dating back to the 1998 season. Moser joins the likes of Shane Solberg (2019 vs Hastings; 2018 vs Briar Cliff) and Jared Nelson (2017 vs Dickinson State). For the first time this season, junior running back Konner McQuillan (Jr., Leavenworth, Kan./Lansing) notched over 100 rushing yards with 102 yards on 20 carries, with a long of 21 yards.

Logan Meyer (So., Alvord, Iowa/West Lyon) started the scoring for the Raiders, punching it in on the ground from three yards out on the opening possession of the contest; as it proved to be the only score of the first quarter.

A minute and a half into the second quarter, Eli Stader (So., Cedar Grove, Wis./Oostburg) caps off a 60-yard drive with a 46-yard field goal to increase the Raider lead to 10-0. Northwestern would find the endzone two more times before halftime, both of them Fryar finding Moser from 26-yards and 9-yards out to extend the Northwestern lead to 24-0 heading in to the locker room.

Midway through the third quarter, Fryar found Moser for the third time on the afternoon from 4-yards out, making it 31-0 Red Raiders.

Finally, early in the fourth quarter, for the fourth time it was Fryar to Moser from 18-yards out capping off a 11 play, 69-yard drive to give the Raiders the final score tally of 38-0.

The Raider defense bounced back this week holding the Doane offense to under 100 total yards of offense on the afternoon. Northwestern’s stout run and pass defense made it nearly impossible for the Tigers to get any momentum on the offensive side of the ball. The defense flew around the field this afternoon forcing two interceptions; while only allowing the Tiger offense to muster 87 yards of offense.

The Raider defense didn’t have many tackle opportunities on the afternoon, but Jaden Snyder (R-So./Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon) led the team this week with four tackles. Parker Fryar (So., Urbandale, Iowa/Van Meter) and Tanner Oleson (Sr., Larchwood, Iowa/West Lyon) both recorded three tackles on the day.

Northwestern has now won four straight games to start the 2021 season, including 11 straight regular-season GPAC games dating back to last season.

Up Next: Northwestern begins a five-week hiatus from Korver Field at De Valois Stadium starting with a trip to Seward, Neb. to face Concordia (Neb.) next week for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff. The Raiders won’t return to Korver Field until Oct. 30 when Dordt comes to town.
