NWC Women’s Cold Shooting Too Much To Overcome Against Dakota State

A cold shooting night proved to be too much to overcome as the Northwestern women’s basketball team lost to Dakota State 77-63 in the final tune-up prior to conference play. The Raiders drop to 0-3 this season; Dakota State improve to 3-2, 3-0 against teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Devyn Kemble and Molly Schany provided the scoring punch for the Raiders with 15 points each. Kemble scored all her points from the three-point line, going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Schany established a new career-high in both points and rebounds (9), a near double-double in just her third game in a Northwestern uniform.

A high-scoring first quarter ended with Dakota State up 21-16, closing on an 8-2 surge finished off with a three-pointer from Courtney Menning. Two free throws by Sammy Blum cut the Raider deficit to five (23-18) in the opening moments of the second period. Dakota State countered with a 10-4 run as Northwestern went cold from the field, missing their next seven shots during a four-minute stretch. Baskets by Emilee Danner and a three-point play by Schany near the end of the half brought the hosts to within eight, 33-25, by halftime.

Northwestern shot 21% from the field (8/38) compared to 50% by the Trojans (13/26).

Trailing by 12 (47-35) with four minutes left in the third quarter, Northwestern outscored DSU 13-0 and briefly took the lead, 48-47, following a basket from Schany. Dakota State scored the final three points of the quarter on a three-point play by Lexi Robson in the closing seconds to make the score 50-48.

The teams traded baskets for the first three-plus minutes of the final quarter as the fifth and final three-pointer by Kemble put Northwestern within one, 56-55. Dakota State, however, began a decisive 9-2 run and held the hosts without a field goal for nearly five minutes to win, 77-63.

Northwestern shot 31% for the game and from the three-point line (8/26). Danner, Taylor VanderVelde and Jada Cunningham all scored eight points and Sammy Blum dished out six assists. The Raiders forced DSU into 26 turnovers.

Dakota State was led by Morgan Koepsell with 16 points, followed by Elsie Aslesen (14pts) and Savannah Walsdorf (13pts). The Trojans shot 53% for the game and held a 42-30 edge on the boards.
