George, Iowa — The Orabs lost a Siouxland Conference doubleheader on the road in George to the Mustangs. Girls lost 61-46 and the boys fell 55-52 in the nightcap.
In the girl’s contest George-Little Rock opened the contest scoring 11 unanswered points and led 11-0 until Makenna Kleinhesselink made a three to take the goose egg off the board. Brooklyn Grady scored the next points to pull the Orabs to within two at 11-9 before Mackensie Post would make a layup at the buzzer to give the Mustangs the lead 13-9 after one. The Mustangs momentum carried in to the second behind seven points from Post and would push their lead to 29-17 at the break, The second half was much like the first and the Mustangs would widen their lead to 44-31 after three and go on to post a 61-46 victory.
The Mustangs had three players in double figures led by Post with 18 points and 10 points each from Lauren Jurrens and Emily Greve. The Orabs were led by Makenna Kleinhesselink’s 13 points.
The Orabs fall to 5-13 on the season 4-12 in the conference and the Mustangs improved to 2-16 overall and 1-14 in the conference.
The boys contest opened with a fast pace with the scored tied at eight with only two minutes gone in the contest. The Mustangs defense would force some turnovers and push them to an 18-14 advantage after one. The Mustangs good ball movement and patience offense would push the lead to a 31-24 at half. Matt Haken sparked the Mustangs in the third scoring eight points and increasing the lead to 43-33 after three quarters. The Orabs would pressure the Mustangs with a full court press forcing some turnovers and capitalizing on the offense end cutting the Mustangs lead to two at 54-52 with less then one minute to go. The Orabs were forced to foul and the Mustangs free throws would be the difference for a 57-52 win.
The Mustangs were led in double figures by Hakin’s 19 points and Payton Mauldin with 14. The Orabs had three players in double figures led by Tye Sudbeck with 14, Kaleb Ackerman 12 points and Jordan Jefferies with 10.
The Orabs fall to 5-12 overall and 4-10 in the conference and the Mustangs improve to 9-8 overall and 6-8 in the conference.
Next up for the Orabs will be another road test Tuesday as they head to Central Lion and the Mustangs will host Okoboji.
