Sheldon, Iowa — Sheldon Orabs split a home double header against the George-Little Rock Mustangs Tuesday night at the O-Rena. The Orab girls took the opener 73-43 and the Mustang boys took the second game 61-37.
The Orabs led at all the breaks in the girls game jumping out to a 20-5 first quarter advantage ending the quarter on a 15–0 run. The Mustang’s rallied back with pressure defense starting the second quarter on 15-5 run and eventually tied the game up and went ahead 26-25 with less the 30 seconds left in the half. Orabs quickly pushed the ball up the court and Raegan Freeman picked a loose ball under the basket put it up and scored and was fouled. She made her free throw giving the Orabs a 28-26 lead at half. The Orabs came out with full court pressure defense in the third quarter forcing costly turnovers and converting them to points. Brooklyn Grady scored 12 of her game high 17 points in the third quarter. Maliah Kleinhesselink wasn’t far behind scoring 9 third quarter points. The Orabs pushed their lead to 58-37 and would go on to a 73-43 victory.
Brooklyn Grady led all scores with 17 points for the Orabs and Maliah Kleinhesselink added 12. Mustangs were led in double figures by Mackensie Post with 12 points and Lauren Jurrens added 11.
The Orabs improved to 2-5 overall and 2-4 in the Siouxland. The Mustangs fall to 0-6 overall and 0-6 in the conference.
The boys game started by trading baskets back and forth and the Mustangs led after the first quarter 13-11. The Mustangs zone defense would hold the Orabs to 4 points and their patient offense would push the Mustangs to a 27-17 lead at half. The Mustangs came out in the second half and kept the defensive pressure on the Orabs and behind the hot shooting of Mustangs Payton Mauldin scoring 15 points in the third quarter alone. The Mustangs lead 47-31 at the end of the third. The Orabs cold shooting would continue in the fourth and the Mustangs would go onto a 61-37 victory.
Payton Mauldin of the Mustangs would lead all scorers with 30 points on the night making 8 three pointers in the contest. Matt Hakin was also in double figures with 11. The Orabs were led in double figures by Kaleb Ackerman with 15.
The Orabs fall to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference while the Mustangs record improves to 2-3 overall and in the conference.
The Orabs will host Central Lion on Friday and the Mustangs will travel to Okoboji as they head into Christmas break
