Orabs win Football Season Opener

Sibley Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs opened the football season with a road win over Sibley Ocheyedan Friday night. The final score was 26-6 in a non-district match up.

The Orabs scored on their first possession going on a 65 yard drive. The season’s first score was a 38 yard pass from Kaleb Ackerman to Trey Iedema on a play down the middle of the field. The extra point kick was no good and the Orabs were in front early 6-0 with 5:42 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon got on the board again early in the second quarter. A high snap with the Generals in punt formation and tackle by the Orabs special teams gave Sheldon a short field at the Sibley Ocheyedan 20 yard line. Brian Bernal scored on a 5 yard run. A 2-point attempt failed and Sheldon was in front 12-0 with 10:57 to go in the first half.

Sibley Ocheyedan cut the lead in half with a 75 yard time consuming drive that used up most of the second quarter. Quarterback Beau Jenness capped the drive with a 1 yard run. The kick was no good and 12-6 would be the half time score.

Sheldon got the ball first to start the second half and used nearly half of the third quarter on a 72 yard scoring drive. On fourth and goal from the 1 yard line Kaleb Ackerman scored on a quarterback keeper. Brian Bernal added the extra point and the Orabs led 19-6 with 6:18 left in the third quarter.

The final score of the night came when Sheldon took over on downs at midfield and Bernal got his second touchdown of the night on a 3 yard run with :42 seconds left in the contest. Bernal added the extra point to make the final 26-6 Sheldon.

Up next for the Orabs will be a trip to South O’Brien next Friday. Sibley Ocheyedan will play host to Okoboji.
