Red Raider Wrestling Wins Final Three Matches; Rally To Beat York

Crete, Nebraska — (RV) Northwestern College won its final three matches to earn a come-from-behind win against York, 26-18, in a non-conference dual held Saturday in Crete, Neb. The Raiders lost their first dual to No.9 Doane, 34-7; they are now 5-3 in dual this season.

Down 12-0 after the first three matches, Northwestern came back to tie the score at 12, following pins from both Breckin Sperling (149) and Blake Pomajzl (157). The Raiders dropped the next two bouts by close decisions and trailed York 18-12 heading into the final three matches.

Northwestern sophomore Luke Jenness, ranked 11th at 184, began the comeback with a major decision victory (12-3) while teammate Bennett Sikkink earned a major decision win (13-2) at 197 to put his team ahead for the first time, 20-18. With both teams in need of a win in the final match, Northwestern junior Skyler Bonestroo delivered in a big way, pinning Ja’Kavion Williams (4:38) to give Head Coach Rik Dahl’s squad a 26-18 victory.

“I was so proud of how our guys battled back against York,” said Northwestern head coach Rik Dahl. “Individually, I was impressed with Pomajzl and how he battled today. His opponent in the Doane match was ranked ahead of him in the GPAC and he went out there and dominated. Jenness also had a solid day in getting two wins for us.”

Pomajzl and Jenness picked up the lone victories in the Raiders morning loss to No.9 Doane, 34-7. Pomajzl defeated Samuel Dunwell by major decision (10-2) and Jenness earned a hard-fought 6-3 win against Garrett Cornwell.

“Our day started off rough against Doane, we came out passive in early moments of the match,” commented Northwestern head coach Rik Dahl. “When you do that against a talented team, it is hard to come back. We had some matches that we could have won but just did not capitalize on our opportunities.”

Northwestern will host the GPAC duals on Saturday, Jan. 30.
