Sheldon Sweeps Basketball Doubleheader at HMS Monday

Hartley Iowa — Sheldon earned a non-conference basketball doubleheader sweep on the road Monday. The free throw line in the fourth quarter was the difference in both games. The girls went 10-of-12 at the stripe in the fourth for a 64-51 win. In the boys game Sheldon was 9-of-10 in the final quarter for a 64-55 win.

Sheldon led at all the breaks up 12-5 at the end of the first quarter. At the half the lead was 31-18. At the end of three the Orabs were in front 46-36. The Hawks came alive offensively in the fourth quarter to close at one point to within 2 points. Sheldon converted their free throws in crunch time to pick up a 64-51 win.

Reagan Freeman scored 10 of her game high 18 points in the fourth quarter. That included 6-of-7 from the line. Maliah Kleinhesselink hit for 14 points with Sydney Olson adding 10. HMS had two players in double figures getting 13 from Jasmine Lux and 10 from Hannah Jochims who fouled out with 2:36 left to play.

With the win Sheldon is 3-9 on the season while Hartley Melvin Sanborn is now 3-8 for the year.

In the boys game free throw down the stretch along with 3-point baskets were the main features of the contest won by the Orabs 64-55. The two teams combined for twenty 3-point buckets with Sheldon hitting 11 and the other 9 going to the Hawks.

Sheldon led at all the breaks. They were up 24-16 at the end of the first quarter only to see HMS close to 37-36 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter Sheldon was up 48-44 heading into the final 8 minutes. Sheldon would convert 9-of-10 chances from the line in the fourth quarter getting the win 64-55.

Kaleb Ackerman scored 7 of his game high 18 points in the fourth quarter including a 5-of-6 performance from the free throw line. Tye Sudbeck knocked down four 3-pointers as part of a 16 point night. All of Mitchel Wolfs 15 points came from behind the stripe. They were joined in double figures by Jordan Jeffries with 11. HMS had a trio of players in double figures led by the inside presence of Lance Berends with 13 on the night. Kooper Ebel hit a trio of threes as part of an 11 point night. Also in double figures was Samuel Haack with 10 points.

With the win Sheldon improves to 4-7 on the season while the Hawks slip to 4-6. Both teams will be in action on Tuesday night with the Orabs at home to Spencer. Hartley Melvin Sanborn will host Trinity Christian.
