Siouxland Conference to expand to 16 teams

Regional, Iowa – As one athletic conference in northwest Iowa is about to go by the wayside, another is about to grow exponentially.

In an email to district patrons, Terry Heman, Superintendent of the Spencer Community School District, says that district along with Cherokee, Estherville-Lincoln Central, and Storm Lake will all be joining the Siouxland Conference effective with the 2026-’27 school year. Heman says the conference’s Board of Directors approved the invitation on December 17th and that all four districts have accepted.

The new alignment will create agruably one of the largest high school conferences in the state, which will consist of 16 schools. Heman says it will “provide a stable and sustainable environment for our student-athletes while encouraging long-term growth and partnerships across schools throughout our region.”

Spirit Lake and Western Christian will also be joining the expanded Siouxland conference, which is currently comprised of Boyden-Hull, Central Lyon, MOC-Floyd Valley, Okoboji, Rock Valley, Sheldon, Sibley-Ocheyedan, Sioux Center, Unity Christian and West Lyon.
