Van Kalsbeek’s 32 Points Guides Raiders Past Mayville State

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men’s basketball team (2-0) takes down the Mayville State Comets (1-2) in non-conference action, 90-83, behind 32 points from Alex Van Kalsbeek (So., Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley).

Three different Raiders eclipse the 20+ point mark as Northwestern explodes for 90 points playing their second game in as many days. Van Kalsbeek led all scorers with his 32 points. Matt Onken (R-So., Marshall, Minn./Marshall) picked up a new career-high 24 points, scoring 12 in each half. Grant DeMeulenaere (Sr., Altoona, Iowa/Grand View Christian) also tallied 20 points in the victory, being the team’s threat from deep as he hit four 3’s.

The first half was a high scoring affair that went in favor of the Raiders who led 54-45 at the break behind Van Kalsbeek’s 20 first half points.

A second half run by the Comets kept them in the game, though the Raiders led by over 20 points multiple times in the contest. Free throw shooting and Mayville State turnovers sealed the victory for Northwestern late.

Up Next: The Raiders will return to the hardwood on Friday, November 5 as they hit the road for the first time this season to compete in the Bellevue Classic Nov. 5-6. Northwestern will battle the Peru State Bobcats (Neb.) on Friday at 5:00 p.m. inside the Gordon Lozier Athletic Center on the campus of Bellevue University.
