Sioux City, Iowa — The Western Christian Wolfpack and Bishop Heelan Crusaders split a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The boys game went to Western 58-41, while Heelan won the girls game 54-32.

The Western boys went 25 of 31 from the free throw line and only made one three pointer as they came away with the the win. Western had a 15-10 lead after one, and at the half, the Wolfpack had a 27-21 lead. After three it was 38-27, and Western came away with the 58-41 win.

Western’s Eli Van Essen hit a game high 14 points, followed by Wyatt Gulker with 13 points. Heelan got a game high 14 from Levi Meis.

With the win, Western improves to 14-3 on the year, and the Crusaders fall to 5-9 on the season.

Cements from Head Coach Derek Keizer:
Both teams showed some fatigue with the quick turn-around game. I thought we were getting great looks around the basket, we just weren’t making any of them.  We missed a lot of lay-ups.

It was a grind out game today for both teams.  Neither team shot it very well, we just forced more turnovers and were able to get to the free throw line.  That was the difference in the game.
Coach Foster gets his guys to play extremely hard and they compete on every possession.  With that being said, we thought our length and size could present some challenges for them..
One of our focuses for Heelen was getting paint touches.  We did a great job of attacking all afternoon which led to us getting to the foul line.  More importantly, we converted our free throws.
Eli Van Essen was great tonight managing the backcourt tonight. He was terrific and had his best game of the year I thought.

The Heelan girls started off hot from beyond the arc. As a team coming into the game, were shooting 27% from long range, but that didn’t show Saturday. Heelan jumped out to a 21-7 lead after one, 39-15 at the half, and went on to win 54-32.

Heelan got a game high 13 Lauryn Peck, Kenley Meis and Brooklyn Stanley each added 12. Sienna Moss got a team high 11 points for the Wolfpack.

With the win, Heelan improves to 11-4 on the season, and Western falls to 4-15 on the year.

Up next for Western Christian is a road contest to Tea, South Dakota on Tuesday night.
