Worthington Minnesota — Western Christian traveled north of the border to Worthington Minnesota Saturday afternoon. The Wolfpack would get a double header split with the Trojans taking the girls game 56-44 while dropping the boys game 60-58 on a last second bucket in the paint by Worthington.
In the girls game the Wolfpack were in control throughout leading at the half 32-12. They continued to control the temp in the second half to get the win 56-44. Abby Postma had a game high 13 points. Madison Vis hit for 10 off the bench. Worthington got a game high 15 points from Maya Scheitel-Taylor.
With the win Western is now 12-4 on the season. Worthington stands at 10-5.
In the boys game that followed Western broke to an early lead only to see Worthington fight their way back in and trail by four at the break 34-29. The second half ran tight for the entire 18 minutes as Ty Van Essen for the Wolfpack and Terbuto Ochothow lit up the scoreboard with 13 and 17 points respectively in the final half of play. The winning basket came from Worthington’s Daniel Pavelko who scored 6 points in the contest. With 10 seconds left Ochothow dribbled up the right sideline and when the defense came out he found Pavelko in the paint for the 5 foot game winner as time expired.
Van Essen split his team leading 25 points evenly with 12 coming in the first half and the remaining 13 in the second half of play. He dropped in ten 2-point baskets, hit a 3 and went 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Ochothow had 17 of his game high 27 in the second half. His line included five 2-point buckets, a trio of threes and a 10-of-10 performance at the free throw line. Van Essen was joined in double figures by Dawson Feenstra who had a 16 point night evenly split between the two halves.
With the win Worthington improves to 8-8 on the season. Western saw an 11 game winning streak come to an end. Their season mark is now 11-3.
