Western Splits Saturday Basketball Double Header With Spirit Lake

Hull Iowa — Western Christian split a Lakes Conference matinee with Spirit Lake at home with the girls falling 37-34 and the boys with a 59-45 win.

Western girls started off with a 6-0 run prompting a quick timeout from Spirit Lake with 6:06 left in the first quarter. With 3:57 left in the quarter the game was tied at 8 a piece and the Indians led 14-8 after one. Spirit Lake’s defense was able to force more turnovers and cold shooting from Western would give Spirit Lake a 26-12 lead at intermission. Spirit Lake scored the first two points of the second half leading 28-12 before the Wolfpack went on an 11-0 run to narrow the margin to 28-23 late in the frame but the Indians led 30-23 at the end of the third. Back and forth in the fourth quarter with both teams missing crucial shots but the Indians would prevail 37-34 for the win.

Spirit Lake was led in scoring by Brooke Smith with 15 while the Wolfpack were led with 10 points a piece from Sienna Moss and Stella Winterfeld.

The Indians improved to 4-8 and Western would fall to 3-10.

The boys contest was back and forth in the first quarter with Vance Katzfey hitting a three at the buzzer giving Spirit Lake a 13-10 advantage after one. The second quarter would belong to Western as they turned up the defensive pressure and would push out to a 26-18 advantage at half. Western kept the momentum going in the third quarter by Wyatt Gulker scoring 8 of his game high 19 in the third and push the Wolfpack’s lead to 42-30 at the end of the third. The Wolfpack went 9-11 from the free throw line in the fourth and would go on to win 59-45.

Western was led in scoring by Gulker’s 19 and Ty Van Essen would score16. The Indians were led in scoring by Brent Scott with 14.

The Wolfpack improved to 9-3 and the Indians suffered their first loss of the season and are at 12-1.

Next up for Western is a trip to Orange City on Monday to take on Unity and Spirit Lake will travel to Spencer on Tuesday evening.
