Sheldon Man Sentenced For Theft From Casino

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Sheldon man has been convicted and sentenced for theft from the Grand Falls Casino near Larchwood.

The Lyon County Attorney’s Office reports that Travis Dean Paquette of Sheldon was sentenced to Theft in the Second Degree. They report that the charge stems from a complaint stating that Paquette took $10,000 in two separate instances in December, 2013, for a total of $20,000, with the intent to deprive Grand Falls Casino.

Paquette was sentenced to probation to the Third Judicial District for two years. A sentence of five years to the Director of the Iowa Department of Corrections was suspended. Paquette was also ordered to pay victim restitution, fines and court costs.

Ellsworth, MN Resident Sentenced On Felony OWI Charge

Rock Rapids, Iowa — An Ellsworth, Minnesota resident has been sentenced on felony OWI charges.

The Lyon County Attorney’s Office reports that Janeen Dirks of Ellsworth has been convicted of Operating While Intoxicated 3rd Offense, a Class D Felony, Habitual Offender.

Dirks was ordered to enter the Residential Treatment Facility Program, complete substance abuse treatment, complete a driving unimpaired program, and was placed on probation to the Third Judicial District Department of Correctional Services for a period of three years.

Dirks’ license was revoked for a period of six years. Dirks was also ordered to pay court costs and a surcharge.

Arrests Made In Three Cases

Rock Rapids, Iowa — Three people were arrested in three separate cases in Lyon County on Thursday, March 12.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that the first case started when Lyon County Deputies observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in Rock Rapids on Thursday. The vehicle was clocked on radar at 102 miles per hour in a 55 zone. Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle and followed it to 1397 Harrison Avenue, a mile north of Rock Rapids on K52. Authorities say the driver then fled on foot into the residence. A short time later, deputies say he was apprehended and identified as 26-year-old Elliot DeWit of Rock Rapids. DeWit was transported to the Lyon County Jail and charged with speeding, interference with official acts, and operating while intoxicated.

In another case from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, they report that also on Thursday, March 12th, they arrested 21-year-old Leonard Michael Doiel, whose address is listed as “homeless.” They say Doiel was arrested by Lyon County Deputies on a charge of failing to comply with the Iowa sex offender registry requirements, an aggravated misdemeanor. Doiel was registered as living at a home on South Park Street in Inwood, but he does not live there. He was arrested in Rock Rapids.

The Lyon County Deputies also report that they arrested 33-year-old Nathaniel Byron Kassel of Rock Rapids in Rock Rapids and charged with disorderly conduct on Thursday, March 12. Deputies say Kassel resisted arrest and was also charged with interference with official acts. Both charges are simple misdemeanors.

Major Damage In Highway 60 Accident

Hospers, Iowa — A traffic accident that closed down the southbound lanes of Highway 60 south of Hospers for several hours Tuesday evening was a big mess to clean up, and caused over a quarter of a million dollars in damage, but no injuries were reported.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says Highway 60’s southbound lanes were closed about 8:20 PM Tuesday evening and did not re-open to traffic until about 1:30 AM Wednesday morning.

According to Sioux County Chief Deputy and Emergency Management Director Nate Huizenga, Hospers Fire, Rescue, and Ambulance Personnel were paged for the report of a semi rollover accident near 410th Street on Highway 60, about a mile southeast of Hospers.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that 47-year-old Clint La Rock of Sparta, Wisconsin was driving a 2010 Freightliner southbound on Highway 60 when he lost control of the semi on the shoulder of the road causing the semi to overturn onto its side.

No injuries were reported.

The semi sustained $85,000, damage. The cargo, which was stone slab countertops, was a total loss estimated at $240,000.

La Rock was cited for failure to maintain control.

The Iowa State Patrol also assisted on the scene.

Sheldon Police Report

sheldon police pdSheldon, Iowa — The latest report from the Sheldon Police Department indicates one arrest and a minor traffic accident over the past few days.

On Friday, March 6th, Sheldon Police report the arrest of a 30-year old man on an RTF Hold Order.  Police say they arrested Stephen Daly at the Sheldon Residential Treatment Facility and transported to the County Jail.

Shortly after 3:30 Monday afternoon, March 9th, police were called to a 2-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 18 and 21st Avenue in Sheldon.  According to the report, a 2010 Ford pickup, driven by 48-year old Dwayne Bieser of Sanborn, was southbound on 21st Avenue, and attempted to turn east onto Highway 18 when his truck struck an eastbound 2012 Dodge Journey, driven by 61-year old Karen Dagel-Whitham of Sibley.  Police estimated approximately $2500 damage to each vehicle, and there were no injuries.  According to authorities, Bieser was ticketed for Failure to Yield From a Stop Sign.

Not Guilty Plea In Trinity HS Burglary

Orange City, Iowa — A Rock Valley man has been arraigned and has pled not guilty to charges surrounding an alleged burglary in Hull.

Sioux County Courthouse_svaTwenty-five-year-old Matthew Kraayenbrink of Rock Valley and a 17-year-old Hull boy are accused of breaking into Trinity Christian High School In Hull on February 11, 2015.

Deputies, who were on the scene investigating reports of burglaries there, apprehended Kraayenbrink and the boy inside the school.

Kraayenbrink is charged with second degree theft, third degree burglary and using a juvenile to commit a criminal offense.

According to court records, no trial date has been set yet for Kraayenbrink
