Child Injured In Accident

O'BrienSheriffSutherland, Iowa — A Sutherland girl was injured in an accident near Sutherland on Sunday, March 27th.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 11:45 am on Sunday, 20-year-old Benjamin Patzlaff of Platte, South Dakota was driving a 1998 Buick Le Sabre westbound on Highway 10. Thirty-eight-year-old Korey Dau of Sutherland was driving a 1995 Chevrolet Suburban westbound on Highway 18, in front of Patzlaff. According to the report, Patzlaff stated he was not paying attention and did not realize Dau was stopped or nearly stopped at the intersection of Highway 10 and Tanager Avenue. Patzlaff ran into the back end of Dau.

The Buick received $4000 damage. The Suburban received $5000 damage.

6-year-old Kate Dau was transported by private vehicle to the Spencer Hospital.


Many Sioux County Fender Benders In Snowstorm

Sioux County Chief Deputy Nate HuizengaOrange City, Iowa — Over 30 accidents were reported in the snowy hours of Wednesday night into Thursday (March 23rd and 24th) in Sioux County — that from Sioux County Chief Deputy Nate Huizenga.


He says with that many accidents, it could have been a lot worse. He says no one was transported by ambulance.


He says the two biggest factors in most of the accidents were visibility and speed.


Hopefully we don’t have too many more snow events, but Huizinga says “slowing down” is always good advice in less-than-perfect conditions.


Thursday’s Sioux County Snowstorm Accidents

Sioux Sheriff Car 84-Sheldon, Iowa — An Iowa Department of Transportation sign and a Boyden woman’s vehicle were damaged in an accident on Thursday, March 24th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 5:45 am, 21-year-old Keri Sneller of Boyden was driving a 2007 Dodge Caliber eastbound on Highway 18, two miles west of Sheldon. According to the report, Sneller lost control of the vehicle, struck an Iowa Department of Transportation traffic sign and entered the south ditch.

The Dodge received $3000 damage; the sign received $100 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Orange City, Iowa — A Hull man’s vehicle was damaged in an accident near Orange City on Thursday.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:10 am, 28-year-old Randy Kooiman of Hull was driving a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on Jackson Avenue, four miles north of Orange City. According to the report, Kooiman lost control of the vehicle and entered the west ditch.

The Pontiac received $500 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Boyden, Iowa — A South Dakota woman and her family were injured in an accident after her van rolled near Boyden on Thursday.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 10:57 am, 28-year-old Aracely Magali of Huron, South Dakota was driving a 2007 Dodge minivan southbound on Kennedy Avenue. according to the report, Magali lost control of the vehicle, entered the west ditch and rolled.

The Dodge received $9000 damage.

Magali and four children received minor injuries and declined further medical attention.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Boyden Fire Department and Boyden Ambulance.


Wednesday’s Sioux County Snowstorm Accidents

sioux county sheriff emblemHawarden, Iowa — A Nebraska woman’s vehicle was damaged in an accident near Hawarden on Wednesday, March 23rd.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 11:01 pm, 30-year-old Elizabeth Bissen of Papillion, Nebraska was driving a 2005 Chrysler Pacifica westbound on 420th Street, two miles north of Hawarden. According to the report, Bissen lost control of her vehicle and entered the south ditch.

The Chrysler received $1200 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Rock Valley, Iowa — A Rock Valley man escaped injury after rolling his vehicle near Rock Valley Wednesday night.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 10:33 pm on Wednesday, 43-year-old Nicolas Ruvalcaba of Rock Valley was driving a 1997 Ford F-150 eastbound on Highway 18. According to the report, Ruvalcaba lost control of his vehicle, entered the north ditch and rolled.

The Ford received $4500 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Sioux Center, Iowa — A Hawarden man’s vehicle was damaged in an accident on Wednesday, March 23rd near Sioux Center.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 9:02 pm on Wednesday night, 57-year-old Jeffrey Smith of Hawarden was driving a 2005 Dodge Stratus eastbound on 420th Street, three miles west of Sioux Center. According to the report, Smith lost control of the vehicle and entered the south ditch.

The Dodge received $1200 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Two Vehicle Accident Takes Down Power Line

Sioux Sheriff 84-8 FacebookSioux Center, Iowa — One vehicle, a power line, and a mailbox were all damaged in an accident on Thursday, March 24th near Sioux Center.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:58 am, 52-year-old Glenda Van Roekel of Sioux Center was driving a 2010 Ford Expedition on Goldfinch Avenue and stopped for the stop sign at 360th Street, four miles northwest of Sioux Center. Twenty-one-year-old Cody Byl of Rock Valley was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on 360th Street. According to the report, Van Roekel turned left onto 360th Street, then Byl swerved to avoid striking the Ford. Byl lost control of the Impala, struck a mailbox, entered the south ditch, and struck a MidAmerican Energy utility pole. The impact caused the power lines to detach from the pole.

The Impala received $10,000 damage; the utility pole and power lines received $1200 damage.

The accident remains under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Sioux Center Fire Department and Sioux Center Ambulance.


Rock Rapids Man Jailed On Felony Drug Charges

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man is behind bars on four charges, including two felonies, and an arrest warrant.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that their deputies arrested 38-year-old Nathan Helwig of Rock Rapids. Helwig was arrested on an outstanding warrant out of Plymouth County, Iowa.

He was also found to be in possession of numerous drug-related items. Helwig was charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, a class D felony; and two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor. He was transported to the Lyon County jail, where at last report he remained in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond.
