Three Different Vehicles Strike Cattle

Lyon Sheriff Facebook HeaderAlvord, Iowa — Two vehicles were totaled and another was damaged after striking cattle on the roadway in the morning hours of Monday, October 17th north of Alvord.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:25 am on Monday, 39-year-old Brandon Kruse of George was driving a 2002 Buick LeSabre westbound on A-26. Fifty-six-year-old Steven Hansman of Phoenix, Arizona was driving a 2015 Ford Escape, also westbound on A-26. 29-year-old Joel Koedam of Lester was driving a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville northbound on K-30.

According to the report, Kruse struck a cow on the roadway, causing his vehicle to spine and strike numerous other cows and then go into the north ditch. Hansman swerved to miss numerous other cows on the road and ended up striking one of the cows that Kruse had hit. Upon the Sheriff’s Office arrival, it was found that Koedam also struck a cow that was in the roadway.

The Buick and Pontiac were each a total loss; the Ford received $5,000 damage; the loss of cattle was $4,000.

No injuries were reported.


Two Men Face Weapons, Other Charges After Saturday Incident

handcuffs - subject inSheldon, Iowa — Two men face charges following an altercation that took place in Sheldon early Saturday evening.

According to an Incident Report from the Sheldon Police Department, the incident took place about 5:20 pm Saturday, at 1401 Park Street in Sheldon.  The report indicates that 43-year old Thomas Gregory Kuiper of Sheldon was jailed on charges of: OWI 1st Offense, a Serious Misdemeanor;  Carrying Weapons, an Aggravated Misdemeanor;  Simple Assault, a Simple Misdemeanor;  Assault With Injury, a Serious Misdemeanor; and Open Container In A Motor Vehicle, a Simple Misdemeanor.  According to the report, Kuiper was armed with a .22 caliber revolver at the time of the incident.

Also jailed, according to the report, was 35-year old Jeffrey Allen Fields of Prairie City, Iowa, who faces charges of Carrying Weapons, an Aggravated Misdemeanor.  The report states that Fields was armed with a .45 caliber pistol at the time of the incident.

Police say that Kuiper and Fields were both transported to the O’Brien County Jail at Primghar.


Orange City Woman Strikes Deer

deer_sxc2Orange City, Iowa — An Orange City woman’s vehicle was damaged after hitting a deer near Orange City on Sunday, October 16th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 10:33 pm on Sunday, 33-year-old Tonya Johnson of Orange City was driving a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox eastbound on Highway 10, one mile west of Orange City. According to the report, Johnson struck a deer on the roadway.

The Equinox received $3,000 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Juvenile Taken To YES Center After Pursuit

Police lightbar chaseRock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids teen was apprehended after leading law enforcement on a pursuit.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that they received a call regarding people trespassing and possibly burglarizing vehicles about six miles northwest of Rock Rapids. A responding deputy observed a vehicle leaving the area.

When the deputy turned his patrol car around to investigate further, the Sheriff’s Office says the driver shut off the vehicle’s head lights and began traveling at a high rate of speed, in excess of 80 miles per hour, on foggy gravel roads.

They say the vehicle was pursued by the deputy for about four miles, when the suspect vehicle entered an acreage site and the driver attempted to conceal the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office K9 unit was called to the scene to track the suspect. The 17-year-old male suspect, from rural Rock Rapids, was apprehended.

He has been charged with eluding law enforcement, a class D felony; operating while intoxicated 1st offense, a serious misdemeanor; a concealed weapons violation, an aggravated misdemeanor; failure to obey a stop sign, and failure to use headlamps when required.

The sheriff’s office reports that at the conclusion of the investigation the juvenile offender was transported to the Youth Emergency Services center in Cherokee.


Hawarden Woman Taken To Hospital After Striking Cow

Hawarden, Iowa — A Hawarden woman was taken to a hospital after an accident near Hawarden on Thursday, October 13th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about at 11:26 p.m., 50-year-old Theresa Sabin of Hawarden was driving a 2001 Buick Regal northbound on Highway 12, about a mile south of Hawarden, when she struck a cow on the roadway.

The Hawarden Ambulance crew took Sabin to the Hawarden Hospital.

The Buick sustained about $2,000 in damages.

The Sheriff’s Office says the Hawarden Police Department, Hawarden Fire Department and Hawarden Ambulance crew assisted them.

Sioux Sheriff 84-8 FacebookInwood, Iowa — A Holstein man’s pickup and a Sioux Falls man’s Semi were damaged in an accident on Thursday, October 13th near Inwood.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 1:31 pm on Thursday, 52-year-old Eugenio Moncada of Sioux Falls was driving a 2005 Sterling semi-tractor pulling a manure spreader northbound on Highway 18, four miles south of Inwood. Fifty-seven-year-old Timothy McGuire of Holstein was driving a 2001 Ford F-350 northbound on Highway 18 behind Moncada. According to the report, Moncada attempted to turn right onto a field driveway; McGuire was unable to stop, attempted to avoid striking Moncada by passing him on the right side and struck the front of the Sterling.

The Sterling received $4000 damage. The Ford received $10,000 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Boyden, Iowa — An Orange City woman’s vehicle was damaged after striking a deer on Thursday, October 13th near Boyden.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:16 am on Thursday, 29-year-old Griselda Gonzalez of Orange City was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse eastbound on Highway 18. According to the report, Gonzalex struck a deer on the roadway.

The Chevrolet received $9,000 damage,
