Two Taken To Hospitals After Accident

Ashton, Iowa — A George teen and a Sheldon man were taken to hospitals after an accident near Ashton on Friday.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 2:10 PM, 19-year-old Nathan DeKam of George was driving a pickup westbound on 230th Street. That’s the county road on the north side of Ashton, near where the Cedar Cabin used to be. As he was attempting to cross the Highway 60 expressway, a semi, driven by 65-year-old Erwin Wynia of Sheldon, was northbound on 60. The semi and pickup collided at the intersection causing both drivers to lose control and the vehicles overturned in the median, according to the report.

The Osceola County Ambulance took DeKam to the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley. Wynia was transported to Sanford Sheldon hospital. Both men have been released, according to the sheriff’s office.

They report that damage to the pickup was estimated at $17,000 and damage to the semi was estimated at $100,000.


Vehicles Collide At Intersection

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids woman’s SUV and a Sioux Falls woman’s car were damaged in a crash on Thursday, May 5, 2016 in Rock Rapids.

The Iowa State Patrol reports that about 1:40 PM, 49-year-old Diane Sieperda of Rock Rapids was driving a 2013 Ford SUV westbound on Highway 9, at the intersection with South Bradley Street in the west part of town. Thirty-five year-old Jamie Hult of Sioux Falls was also westbound on 9 in a 2007 Kia when the vehicles collided. The report says that Sieperda improperly changed lanes or failed to signal her intentions.

Sieperda’s Ford SUV sustained $5000 in damages, and Hult’s 2007 Kia sustained $7000 in damages.

Sieperda was charged with a turning at intersection violation. Hult was charged with operation without registration card or plate.

The Rock Rapids Fire Department and Lyon County Ambulance crew assisted at the scene.


Orange City Police Called To Early Morning Disturbance

OC PD Orange City PoliceOrange City, Iowa — An Illinois man was arrested in Orange City in early morning hours on Friday, May 6th.

The Orange City Police Department reports that at about 12:39 am, officers were called to the Super 8 Motel in Orange City for a disturbance. According to the report, when officers arrived they observed one of the motel rooms and its contents damaged. 25-year-old Lapril Stephon Jones of Danville, Illinois was taken to the Orange City Hospital for injuries and then placed under arrest and charged with Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree and booked in the Sioux County Jail.

The Orange City Ambulance and the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.


Man Leads Officers On Chase Around & Through Sanborn

Police lightbar chaseSanborn, Iowa — A Hartley man faces a laundry list of traffic charges, following a pursuit through O’Brien County Thursday (May 5th) afternoon.

The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says the incident began when one of their deputies attempted to stop a truck driven by Robert Leroy Peters, Jr., of Hartley, in the rural area near Sanborn.  Deputies say Peters refused to stop, leading the deputy on a pursuit through Sanborn and the surrounding area.  Officers from the Sanborn Police Department, as well as an Iowa State Trooper, joined in the pursuit, and assisted in getting the suspect stopped in a field northeast of Sanborn.

Authorities say Peters was placed under arrest, and is charged with Eluding, and Driving While Barred, both Aggravated Misdemeanors, along with Driving While License Suspended, Reckless Driving, Improper Pass, Stop Sign Violation, and No Insurance, all Simple Misdemeanors.

In addition, deputies say the owner of the truck that Peters was driving, Earl Louis Halbur of Spencer, was charged with Allowing an Unauthorized Person To Drive, a Simple Misdemeanor.


Hospers Man Hits Deer

deer_sxc2Alton, Iowa — A Hospers man struck a deer on the morning of Tuesday, May 4th near Alton.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:01 am on Tuesday, 40-year-old Joshua Boersma of Hospers was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado southbound on Highway 60, one mile south of Hospers. According to the report, Boersma struck a deer on the roadway.

The Chevrolet received $5000 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Rock Valley Man Facing Felony Drug Charges

Rock Valley, Iowa — A Rock Valley man faces felony drug charges after an arrest earlier this week.

The Rock Valley Police Department reports that they arrested 20-year-old Andres Alberto Ramos of Rock Valley on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016.

Officers say they executed a search warrant at 1215 14th Street Lot #4 in Rock Valley, after which Ramos was charged with Possession with Intent to Manufacture or Deliver Marijuana – less than fifty kilograms and Failure to Affix Drug Tax Stamp, both class D felonies; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, which is a simple misdemeanor.

In Iowa, a Class D Felony is punishable by a prison term of five years and a fine of between $750 and $7500.  Those are the penalties Ramos faces if he’s convicted.

Officers say it is an ongoing investigation, and more charges are expected to be filed.
