Boyden, Iowa — A Hospers man was injured in an accident after striking a deer with his vehicle on Thursday, September 15th near Boyden.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 7:32 am on Thursday, 52-year-old Edward Miedema of Hospers was driving a 1997 GMC pickup westbound on Highway 18, two miles east of Boyden. According to the report, Miedema struck a deer on the roadway.
The GMC received $3000 damage.
Miedema reported minor injuries and sought medical attention on his own.
Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man was taken to a hospital after an accident in Rock Rapids on Thursday, September 15th.
The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that 20-year-old Keisha Van Veldhuizen of Rock Rapids was driving a 2007 GMC Yukon south on Lincoln Street in Rock Rapids. Twenty-three-year-old Brendan Ryan of Rock Rapids was driving a 2003 Subaru Impreza eastbound on 1st Avenue East. According to the report, Van Veldhuizen entered the intersection without yielding to Ryan and struck Ryan’s vehicle in the driver side door pushing the vehicle up onto the curb.
Ryan was transported to the Sanford Rock Rapids Hospital by private vehicle for a possible injury.
Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man was injured in an accident during the evening hours of Tuesday, September 13th near Sioux Center.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 6:58 pm on Tuesday, 23-year-old Saul Martinez of Sioux Center was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 southbound on Indian Avenue, three miles northeast of Sioux Center. According to the report, Martinez lost control of the vehicle, entered the east ditch and struck a tree.
The Ford received $6,000 damage.
Martinez reported minor injuries and sought medical attention on his own.
Sheldon, Iowa — A Sheldon man faces a laundry list of charges following an incident that took place Tuesday evening (September 13th).
According to Sheldon Police, a motorist had reported to O’Brien County Dispatch that a motorist was westbound from Sanborn at a high rate of speed, passing vehicles in a reckless manner, and forcing cars off the road. According to authorities, a Sheldon Police Officer intercepted a vehicle matching the description given by the caller at the intersection of North 5th Avenue and Park Street (Highway 18) in Sheldon. The officer reported witnessing reckless operation of the vehicle, including using the left turn lane on Park Street to pass other vehicles, and running the stop sign at 2nd Avenue, where he turned south onto 2nd Avenue (Business 60).
The Sheldon officer says he got the vehicle stopped in the 600 block of 2nd Avenue, and made contact with the car’s driver, who police identified as 28-year old Saverio Marino of Sheldon.
According to police, Marino allegedly was armed with a handgun, and was reportedly in possession of prescription drugs prescribed to someone other than himself, at the time of his arrest. Police say he faces charges of Felon In Possession of a Firearm, which is a felony. He was also charged with 1st Offense OWI, and a Prescription Drug Violation, both serious misdemeanors, along with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Failure To Yield To An Emergency Vehicle, Failure to Obey A Stop Sign, or Yield Right Of Way, Passing in a No Passing Zone, Failure To Have a Valid License, Improper Use of Registration, and Operating Without Registration, all of which are simple misdemeanors.
Authorities say Marino was jailed at the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar.
Primghar, Iowa — More than $1-million dollars damage is reported following a single vehicle accident Tuesday evening east of Primghar.
According to the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened when a 2012 Freightliner tractor-trailer rig, driven by 36-year old Joshauwa Wiley of Kansas City, Missouri, was eastbound on 380th Street and attempted a right turn, to go south on Starling Avenue. Deputies say Wiley apparently turned too sharp and entered the ditch, causing the trailer to overturn, and the tractor to jackknife.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the semi was hauling four computerized power units for windmill turbines at the time of the crash. Deputies say those power units, which are valued at a total of more than $1-million, were destroyed in the accident. Wiley’s tractor-trailer rig sustained an estimated $72,469 damage, as well.
Wiley escaped injury in the crash, and was not ticketed, according to the report.
Hospers, Iowa — A Winterset, Iowa man was taken to the hospital after a construction area accident near Newkirk on Monday.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before 9:09 a.m., 51-year-old Robert Johnson of Winterset was driving a 2014 Broce Broom road sweeper eastbound on B40 or 400th Street near a construction area. The report says he stopped, reversed toward the south ditch and attempted to drive westbound when he lost control of vehicle and it entered the south ditch. The sweeper rolled onto its top in the ditch.
The Orange City Ambulance crew took Johnson to the Orange City Health System hospital for treatment of what were called “minor” injuries.
The Sheriff’s Office says the Orange City Ambulance crew and Orange City Fire Department assisted on the scene.
