Woman Injured In Melvin Accident

Osceola Sheriff Car 72-2Melvin, Iowa — A Melvin woman was transported to the hospital in the aftermath of a two-vehicle accident in Melvin Wednesday afternoon.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened shortly before 1 pm Wednesday at the intersection of 2nd Avenue and North Street in Melvin.  Deputies say a 2006 Ford F-150 pickup, registered to Timothy Lee Helmers of Sanborn, and driven by 68-year old Jonel Steinmetz of Melvin, was southbound on 2nd Avenue.  According to the report, Steinmetz hit the gas instead of the brake, and collided with a 1999 Ford F-350 truck registered to Raveling, Inc. of Melvin, and driven by 19-year old Levi Jacob Verdoorn of Sanborn, which was eastbound on North Street.  Deputies say that Verdoorn’s truck then spun around and collided with a legally parked 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, owned by Rexferd Michelson of Melvin.

Deputies estimate damage to Steinmetz pickup at $15-thousand.  Damage to Helmers’ truck was estimated at $10-thousand, with about $2-thousand damage to the parked pickup.

Steinmetz was transported to the Sanford Sheldon Medical Center by Sibley Ambulance with possible injuries.  Verdoorn escaped without injury.

Steinmetz was reportedly ticketed for Failure To Yield to Vehicle on Right.

Osceola County deputies were assisted at the scene by the Melvin Ambulance.


Two Go To Hospital After Accident

AccidentGeneric 2Rock Rapids, Iowa — A traffic crash near Rock Rapids Wednesday afternoon sent two people to the hospital, and totaled two vehicles.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says the accident happened shortly before 5 pm Wednesday at the intersection of 180th Street and Garfield Avenue, two miles south and three miles west of Rock Rapids.  Deputies say a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup, driven by 17-year old Kane Spencer, of Little Rock, was southbound on Garfield Avenue, and, according to authorities, failed to stop for the stop sign posted at the 180th Street intersection, striking the passenger side of a westbound 2014 GMC Terrain, driven by 62-year old Cheryl Hulstein, of Rock Rapids.  Deputies say both vehicles came to rest in the south ditch, with Hulstein’s SUV coming to rest on it’s left side.

According to authorities, Hulstein had to be extricated from her SUV, by the Rock Rapids Fire Department, and was then transported to Sanford Rock Rapids Hospital for treatment of possible injuries.  Spencer was reportedly transported by private vehicle for observation.

Deputies estimated damage to Spencer’s pickup at $10-thousand, while Hulstein’s SUV sustained an estimated $20-thousand in damage.  Deputies say damage to both vehicles was enough to total them.

The Sheriff’s Office says Spencer was cited for Failure to Obey Stop Sign, and Use of Electronic Communication Device on a Restricted License, both simple misdemeanors.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Rock Rapids Fire Departement, Lyon County Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol and Track Side Towing from Alvord.


Sibley Man Charged With Felony Failure To Register As Sex Offender

jail behind barsSibley, Iowa — A 19-year old Sibley man turned himself in to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Thursday (August 18th) on felony sex offender charges.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, their deputies arrested 19-year old Talon Thomas Drown, of Sibley, for an alleged violation of Iowa’s Sex Offender Registry law, 2nd Offense.  The 2nd offense raises the charge to felony status.

Authorities allege that he had been living in Osceola County for more than five days without registering his address as a sex offender.

At last report, Drown was being held in the Osceola County Jail in Sibley in lieu of a $5-thousand bond.


Nebraska Man Rolls Vehicle

sioux county sheriff emblemRock Valley, Iowa — A Nebraska man’s vehicle was damaged after it rolled near Rock Valley on Sunday, August 14th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 1:15 pm on Sunday, 20-year-old Uriel Cabrales of David City, Nebraska was driving a 2001 Ford Ranger northbound on Elmwood Avenue, two miles south of Rock Valley. According to the report, Cabrales lost control of the vehicle, entered the east ditch and rolled into a farm field.

The Ford received $5,000 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Larchwood Man Strikes Deer

deer_sxc2Larchwood, Iowa — A Larchwood man struck a deer near Larchwood on August 15th.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that 69-year-old Thomas Skidmore of Larchwood was driving a 2008 Toyota westbound on Highway 9, 1/4 mile east of Birch Avenue. According to the report, Skidmore struck a deer that entered the roadway from the south ditch.

The Toyota received $4,000 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Pass Leads to Accident Near Rock Valley

siouxsheriff2Rock Valley, Iowa — Two vehicles were damaged in an accident at an intersection near Rock Valley on Friday, August 12th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that at about 12:35 pm on Friday, 31-year-old Erica Harmsen of Rock Valley was driving a 2014 Chevrolet Traverse westbound on Highway 18, four miles west of Rock Valley. Sixty-four-year-old Michael Bruns of George was driving a 2002 Sterling dump truck westbound on Highway 18 behind Harmsen. According to the report, Bruns began passing another vehicle as Harmsen attempted to turn left onto Cleveland Avenue. Bruns then struck Harmsen in the intersection.

The Traverse received $8,000 damage; the dump truck received $2,000 damage.
