Two Vehicle Accident In Larchwood

Lyon Sheriff Facebook HeaderA Larchwood woman’s vehicle and South Dakota woman’s vehicle were damaged in an accident on Saturday, June 6th.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, 15-year-old Kiana Roemen of Larchwood, was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix southbound on Dement Street. Thirty-three-year-old Brandi Grace of Garretson, South Dakota was driving eastbound on Brown Street in a 2000 Saturn. According to the report, Roemen’s vehicle struck Grace’s vehicle in the intersection.

The Saturn received $2000 damage. The Pontiac received $2500 damage.

No injuries were reported.


Larchwood Woman Hits Parked Car

Lyon County Sheriff Car Door 60-8A Larchwood woman’s vehicle and a parked vehicle were damaged in an accident on Sunday, June 7th.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports, that at about 10:48 am, 36-year-old Amber Hess of Larchwood was driving a 2004 Volkswagen Beetle northbound on Hyland Avenue. According to the report, Hess became distracted by adjusting her seat, went off the roadway and struck a parked 2001 Chevy Tahoe, owned by Robert Tracy of Larchwood.

Hess’s Volkswagen received $6000 damage. Tracy’s Tahoe received $2000 damage.

No injuries were reported.

Three Taken To Hospital After Accident

Hospers, Iowa — Three people were taken to a hospital after an accident in Hospers on Sunday, June 7th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that just before noon, 38-year-old Marla Luitjens of Hospers was driving a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox southbound on Fourth Avenue. They say 51-year-old Vincent Luitjens of George was backing a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer northbound on Fourth Avenue. The report says he struck the Equinox on the roadway.

The Hospers Ambulance took Marla Luitjens and passengers in the vehicle, 53-year-old Betty Funk of Strafford, MO and an 11-year‐old girl from Hospers to the Orange City Hospital.

The Equinox sustained approximately $13,000 in damages. The Trailblazer sustained an estimated $6,000 in damages.

Vincent Luitjens was cited for unsafe backing.

The Sheriff’s Office says the Hospers Fire Department and Hospers Ambulance crew assisted at the scene.


Estherville Police Investigate Death Of Teen – UPDATE

Estherville, Iowa — An Estherville teen faces 1st Degree Murder charges in connection with the shooting death of a second Estherville teen.

Emmet County Sheriff’s authorities say that an investigation into the death of 19-year old Thomas Bortvit resulted in 1st Degree Murder charges being filed against 18-year old Lee Samuel Christensen.

Authorities say that an arrest warrant was issued, with Christensen being located in Minneapolis, where he was arrested and taken to the Hennepin County Jail where he is being held pending extradition back to Iowa.

Bortvit was last seen Saturday evening, and his vehicle was located later in the day Saturday.  Estherville authorities, along with the help of volunteers, searched throughout the entire southern portion of Estherville.  Police and Emmet County Sheriff’s officers located Bortvit’s body late Sunday afternoon, and immediately launched an investigation into his disappearance and death.

Emmet County Sheriff’s Office personnel, as well as Estherville Police, and agents from the Iowa Bureau of Criminal Investigation  conducted the investigation.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says that the investigation is continuing.

The Estherville Police Department posted a message on their Facebook page Sunday morning asking for the public’s assistance in locating 19-year-old Thomas Bortvit of Estherville. Bortvit had not been seen since Saturday evening. Bortvit’s vehicle was located later in the day.

The Estherville Police Department, with the help of volunteers, then conducted a ground search beginning in the area of 6th Avenue South in Estherville and stretching throughout the entire south side of the city of Estherville.

Police and the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department located the body of Thomas Bortvit late Sunday afternoon and are in the process of conducting a thorough investigation into his death and disappearance. The agencies are being assisted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Rock Rapids Man Arrested

Lyon County Sheriff Car Door 60-8Rock Rapids, Iowa — A Rock Rapids man was arrested on Saturday, June 6th in Rock Rapids.

According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 3:00 am, Lyon County Deputies responded to a report of a person shooting a gun outside of their residence in Rock Rapids. Officers determined that 33-year-old Eric P. Selken of Rock Rapids had discharged a 9 mm gun one time on his own property. Selken was subsequently arrested and charged with Reckless Use of a Firearm, and Discharging a Weapon Within the City Limits. Selken was transported to the Lyon County Jail where he was held on the two simple misdemeanor charges.


Orange City Man Arrested

According to the Orange City Police Department, at approximately 9:00 pm, Orange City officers were called to a suspicious male walking around the golf course, up and down several streets and pacing on the neighbors porch in Alton. After further investigation Cornelio Vega, age 48, of Orange City was arrested for Public Intoxication.
