Head-On Crash Sends Teen To Hospital

Rock Valley, Iowa — A Rock Valley teen was taken to the hospital after an accident near Rock Valley on Monday, January 19th.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 5:40 PM, 15-year-old Joel Baartman of Rock Valley was driving a 2003 Buick Century eastbound on Highway 18, two miles east of Rock Valley. Fifty-four-year-old Kelly Miller of Urbandale was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Impala westbound on Highway 18.

The report says Baartman crossed the centerline and struck the Miller Chevy. Both vehicles then entered the north ditch where Baartman’s vehicle rolled.

The Rock Valley Ambulance transported Baartman to Hegg Memorial Hospital in Rock Valley.

The Buick and Chevy sustained approximately $8,000 in damages, each.

Baartman was charged with driving on the wrong side of highway.

The Rock Valley Fire Department and the Rock Valley Ambulance crew assisted the Sheriff’s Office.


Thirty-One People Charged With Alcohol Violations Near Hospers

Hospers, Iowa — Thirty one people were cited when the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office broke up a party on Saturday, January 17.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that in the 11 PM hour, they investigated a Text-a-Tip report of underage drinking going on at a home in the 4400 mile of 395th Street, a half mile west of Hospers.

Upon further investigation the sheriff’s office found a large gathering at that location. The officers charged 31 people with unlawful possession of alcohol.

One of the people charged was transported to Sanford Sheldon Hospital by the Hospers Ambulance for treatment of injuries sustained in a fall.

The Iowa State Patrol, Orange City Police Department and the Hospers Ambulance crew assisted deputies on the scene.


Osceola County Sheriff’s Office Makes Two Drug Arrests, One Trespassing Arrest

Sibley, Iowa — Two Sibley residents have been arrested on drug charges — one of them a felony — after a search by Osceola County Deputies.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports that they arrested 67-year-old Thomas Ray Stewart, and 58-year-old Debra Kay Stewart, both of Sibley on Monday, January 19th, 2015.

Osceola County deputies carried out a search warrant on Second Street Northeast in Sibley on Monday. During the search of the home, deputies found several items of drug paraphernalia, concentrated marijuana wax and marijuana plant material.

Thomas Stewart was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, a serious misdemeanor; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a simple misdemeanor; Prohibited Acts, an aggravated misdemeanor; and Failure to Affix a Drug Tax Stamp, a class “D” felony. Debra Stewart was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Prohibited Acts.

Both were booked into the Osceola County Jail, and at last report were being held there, Thomas Stewart on a $5000 bond and Debra Stewart on a $2000 bond.

In other news from the Osceola County Sheriff’s office, one of their deputies arrested 57-year-old Randall Dean Bruns of Ashton on Monday, January 19th, 2015. Bruns was allegedly on private property without the owner’s permission. He was charged with trespassing and at last report was being held on a $300 bond.


Boyden Man Injured In Explosion On Monday At Site Of Friday Fire

Boyden, Iowa — Emergency responders were again called to the site of a Friday night fire on Monday, this time for an explosion and injury.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 2:15 PM on Monday, January 19th, they received a call of a farm accident that occurred at 3768 360th Street, seven miles southwest of Boyden. They report that 34-year-old Scott Mulder of Boyden was unloading a feeder in a hog building when an explosion occurred near a pit area of the building.

Mulder sustained serious injuries and the Boyden Ambulance took him to Sioux Center Health Hospital. He was later flown by fixed-wing aircraft to a burn unit in Minneapolis, MN.

Fire departments from Boyden, Hull, and Orange City, the Sioux Center Fire Chief, and ambulances from Boyden and Orange City responded to the scene.


Deputy Checking To Make Sure Travelers Are OK Results In Alcohol Arrests

Rock Rapids, Iowa — A deputy’s stopping to make sure travelers were okay south of Rock Rapids has led to alcohol arrests.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 2 AM on Saturday, January 17, 2015, one of their deputies came upon a vehicle on A34 at the stop sign of Highway 75, about five miles south of Rock Rapids. One of the passengers was standing outside of the car and a second passenger had her door open, so the deputy exited his car to check welfare of the passengers.

After investigating, the deputy believed all four passengers of the vehicle were under the age of twenty one and had been consuming alcohol. The driver, also under the age of twenty one, had not been consuming alcohol, according to the report.

Nineteen-year-old Jessica Mehls of Sibley was cited for possession of alcohol under the legal age. Three juveniles were cited for possession of alcohol and referred to juvenile court.


Milford Man Arrested On Drug Charges Near Harris

Harris, Iowa — A Milford man has been charged with drug offenses after he was arrested near Harris.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office reports that about 2:20 AM on Sunday morning, January 18, 2015, one of their deputies arrested 21-year-old Brandon Michael Koch of Milford.

The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop on Highway 9 east of Harris.

Koch was charged with the alleged Possession of a Controlled Substance, Marijuana, a Serious Misdemeanor; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor.

Koch was transported to the Osceola County Jail and was later released on bond.
