Sheldon, Iowa — A line of severe weather hit Northwest Iowa Sunday night causing some major flash flooding and wind damage to the area. Rock Valley reported having traffic down to one lane on highway 18 due to flooding. Several wind gusts of up to 70 mph were reported in Hull and Boyden and Inwood reported hail of 1″ diameter. The image on the right is from a listener in Sibley.
Have an image or report to share? E-mail is at email@example.com or leave a comment below.
Here is another image of the dramatic shelf cloud that accompanied the gust front. This was taken a mile west of Matlock.
It was taken by KIWA News Director Scott Van Aartsen, who reports that just as the cloud passed overhead there was a downpour of very heavy rain and strong wind. He reported it reminded him of a blizzard. Visibility was near zero for a few minutes.
We have an eyewitness report of large branches down near the Boyden Pit.
We also have second-hand reports of a number of large branches and several trees down across the area, including one in Rock Rapids that was split either by wind or lightning, landing partilaly on a house and destroying a swing set.
Just a few examples of the severe weather damage. Again if you want to report storm damage, email your report to firstname.lastname@example.org.
On a related note, the City of Hull had extensive tree damage as a result of Sunday night’s storm. Crews will be doing a city wide clean up of tree damage and request travelers to avoid traveling in the City of Hull this morning. This will help make clean up go easier and quicker. The City of Hull thanks you for your cooperation in this matter.
Here are the official reports from the national weather service from Sunday night’s storm. These are the ones that were submitted to the National Weather Service, and certainly is not a full list.
