Sheldon Council To Consider TIF Proposal

Sheldon, Iowa — When the Sheldon City council meets this Wednesday January 7th, they will be asked to consider an application for Tax Council ChambersIncrement Financing as well as consideration of a proposal for a new commercial development project. Other business will include the second reading of an ordinance change that would give the mayor and council more of a role in the appointment of police officers and supervision of the department.

The council will also be asked to make a decision related to the way the City’s expenditure on the demolition of the former bowling alley will be recovered.   This will be done through a tax assessment on the property.  It is up to the council to set the assessment schedule and the interest rate that will be charged.

Wednesday’s 4:30 meeting will be held in the upper level of the Sheldon Community Services Center.

Significant Snowfall Predicted For Northwest Iowa; Then Bitterly Cold Conditions

Sioux Falls, SD — The National Weather Service is advising that significant snow will fall in much of the region today and cold conditions will arrive soon after that. Meteorologist Mike Gillispie of the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Sioux Falls tells us about the timing of the forecast.

He says the most significant factor is how quickly those predicted seven inches will fall.

The National Weather Service says while wind speeds will stay below blizzard criteria, they do predict wind speeds of 15 to 25 miles per hour and perhaps even higher in some areas as the snow is falling.

Gillispie says another issue is the low temperatures, with highs lucky to hit 10 above today (Monday) and lows around -5 tonight.

He says with the return of a south wind on Thursday, there should be a little bit of a warm up. He says highs should reach 15 or 20 above, but then we’ll see single digits for highs again on Friday and possibly even Saturday.

John Kooiker croppedJohn Kooiker of Boyden has been selected as the Republican candidate.

We had a chance to speak with Kooiker. He says his background is in education, agriculture, and the military.

So, says Kooiker, that’s what they did.

Kooiker says while he does have a lot of volunteer experience, his only previous political experience is on the Sioux County Soil and Water Conservation District Board. He says he served as a commissioner several years ago for six years and has now been serving in that capacity again for the past five years.

We asked him why he’s running.

He says his connection with Alons didn’t stop there, it continued on the day of the Representative’s funeral.

Kooiker says he won’t say that he’s the best.

While Kooiker is a Republican, he says he would represent all people in the district .

The special election will be held this coming Tuesday, January 6th, 2015.
