Altena Sheriff
Sheriff Dan Altena says his office worked with the Franken Leadership Center, which is affiliated with Northwestern College in Orange City. The Center also manages the Carlson Internship program, which connects highly-motivated and intellectually-curious students with top internships throughout the country.

Altena tells us how it got started.

He says the two interns, Amber Beyer and Julia Van Dyk, worked closely with the Sheriff and his staff to produce nine public relation and educational videos. He says some of them will show what each department at the sheriff’s office does.

The professional-quality videos will be posted on the Sheriff’s Office YouTube Channel, with links on their Facebook page and website. A new video will be posted every few weeks.

Altena says that the NWC interns “did a fantastic job in creating the videos.” He says they were very pleasant to work with, and their staff really enjoyed the partnership.

Lyon County Farmer Is Finalist For National Honor

Larchwood, Iowa — A Lyon County farmer is one of four finalists to be named America’s Pig Farmer of the year.
Marti Knoblock
The National Pork Board says they created the America’s Pig Farmer of the Year contest to recognize the best of the best in pig farming. This prestigious honor is being awarded annually to the pig farmer who best demonstrates and lives by what they call the “We Care” ethical principles.

Videos have been created to tell people about the finalists. In his video, Marti Knoblock says that the possibility of connecting more with the public about how he and his family raise pigs is something he looks forward to doing more of.

He says it’s about telling today’s consumers about modern pig farming and how farmers can care for their animals as they address the consumers’ questions.

For more information about Knoblock’s farming operation and to vote for him to be the National Pork Board’s America’s Pig Farmer Of the Year, click here.

Troopers Out In Force This Weekend

Iowa State Patrol logoSheldon, Iowa — Iowa State Troopers will be out in force this Labor Day holiday weekend, to enforce the state’s traffic laws, and help make sure the state’s travelers have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Iowa State Patrol Trooper Vince Kurtz says that declining gasoline prices are expected contribute to putting even more people on the road this weekend.

Trooper Kurtz says there are a number of things you can do this holiday weekend to help keep yourself and your family safe on the road.

He says you should enjoy your celebration, but make sure you have a sober driver.

Kurtz says excessive speed is also a factor in many of the crashes he sees.

Kurtz says troopers will be out in force on Iowa roadways this weekend to not only enforce the traffic laws, but to assist motorists who need help.  He reminds us that a trooper’s primary job is to keep people safe on Iowa’s roadways.
