Betty M. Streff, 55 years old, of Alton, IA, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, At Orange City Area Health Systems Hospital in Orange City, IA.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Rev. Terry Roder officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Alton.

Visitation will be anytime after 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013. The family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. with a vigil prayer service at 6 p.m., all at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.

Betty was born April 14, 1957, at LeMars, IA, the daughter of Clarence and Phyllis (Krier) Streff. She was raised in Alton on the family farm & attended Sioux Center Community Special Education in Sioux Center, IA and Hope Haven in Rock Valley, IA. In 1990 she moved to Village North West in Sheldon where she excelled in her social living in a community waiver home and working at the North West Enterprises. She moved to Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen in May of 2010.

Betty was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Betty was a devoted and loving daughter, a loyal fun loving sister and a special aunt to her nieces and nephews. She loved to dance, roller skate and bowl. She also loved purses and Mountain Dew. Betty lived and loved life with zest and touched many hearts. She will be in ours forever.

Survivors include: four sisters & their husbands, Mary Ann and Dale Jobe of Neosho, MO, Patti and Ed Walsh of Sioux City, IA, Jane and Wayne Horkey of Alton, IA, and Bev and Marc Thoene of Alton, IA; one brother-in-law, Bill Schroeder and his wife Janys of Kingsley, IA; numerous nieces & nephews.

Preceded by: her parents, a sister, Marge Schroeder, and a niece, Anna Thoene.
Casket Bearers will be, Greg & Adam Schroeder, Mike & Luke Horkey, Britton Jobe, Jamie Worrell.

Larry Hinken, age 73, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at Sheldon Senior Care.

Funeral Services will be Monday, February 4, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Rev. Marvin Lindley officiating. Graveside Service at 1:15 P.M. on Monday at Remsen City Cemetery in Remsen, Iowa.

Paul T. Plehall age 84 of Sibley, IA died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Country View Nursing Home in Sibley, IA.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, February 4, 2013 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Sibley, with Father Timothy Hogan as celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery in Sibley.

Visitation will be Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 from 2-8 PM with family present from 6-8 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley. There will be a rosary at 5:00 PM and a Vigil service at 7:30 PM Sunday evening at Jurrens Funeral Home in Sibley.


Nadine Dykstra

Nadine Dykstra age 55 of George, IA died Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral service will be 1:30 PM Friday, Feb. 1st at Hope Reformed Church in George, IA, with Rev. Dave Poppen officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 31st from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at Hope Reformed Church in George.

Nadine Sue (De Groot) Dykstra was born on April 5, 1957, the daughter of John and Evelyn (Schroder) De Groot in Sibley, IA. She grew up on a farm east of George, IA. She attended school in George and graduated from George High School in 1975. Following her graduation she was united in marriage to Kenneth Jay Dykstra on June 25, 1976 at the Hope Reformed Church rural George. To this union three children were born, Jennifer, Brad and Todd. The couple lived on a farm for a time and then moved into George in 1986. Nadine worked as a daycare provider for a while and managed the George pool for several years. She recently worked as a librarian at the George Little Rock Public School and the George Public Library. She was a member of the Hope Reformed Church, where she was active in the ladies circle and the church library. Nadine served on the George pool committee and was a member of a book club. She enjoyed reading and baking sweets for her family and friends. She loved spending time with her family and especially loved spoiling her grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.

Nadine is survived by her three children, Jennifer (Dan) Helkenn, Brad Dykstra and Todd Dykstra and fiancé, Kim Krull all of George, IA; four grandchildren, Matthew, Garrett, Benjamin and Amelia Helkenn; four siblings, Darrell (Twyla) De Groot of Sheldon, IA, Dale De Groot of Prospect, KY, Carol (Arthur) Hovey of Seward, NE and Douglas (Kathy) De Groot of George, IA; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Evelyn De Groot and husband, Kenneth.


Sena Dietz

Sena “Auntie” Dietz, age 96 of George, IA died on Monday, January 28, 2013 at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, Feb. 1st at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, IA, with Rev. Paul Soderquist officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.

Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 31st from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

Sena Dietz was born January 11, 1917 at the family farm in Lyon County, IA, near Edna, Iowa, the daughter of Charles and Ann (Hilbrands) Sprock. She lived on a farm and attended country school through the 8th grade. At age of 9 Sena’s mother died leaving Sena and her sister, Marie responsible for the house hold duties. For entertainment Sena and her siblings enjoyed playing music, so they formed a band and played for barn dances in the area. She played piano and accordion, which she played by ear.

On February 2, 1938 Sena was united in marriage to Jacob Lubertus Dietz at the Hope Reformed Church Parsonage near George. They lived in George and Sena worked at the “White Shop” and the “George Locker” for many years. Later in life she helped her husband with his trucking business. On March 22, 1994 Sena’s husband Jake died after 56 years of marriage.

After her husband’s death Sena spent most of her time with her sister, Marie. She was a very talented seamstress and enjoyed needlework and crafts. She also enjoyed watching basketball, volleyball and golf on TV. She was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. Most of all she was devoted to her family, which she treasured family gatherings.

This past Monday, January 18, 2013 Sena passed away at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, Iowa at the age of 96. Left to cherish her memory are three nieces, Carol Verhoef of Rock Rapids, IA, Janice Mahler of Aurora, CO and Donna DeBoer of George, IA; a nephew, Daryl (Glenda) Hollander of Hollister, MO; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ann Sprock; her husband, Jake Dietz; a sister, Marie Hollander; and two brothers, John and “Hank” Sprock.


Lubbert Niessink

Lubbert Niessink, age 93 of Rock Rapids, IA passed away January 28, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.

Services will be held in the spring and will be announced at a later date.
