Dixon L. Nagel

Dixon L. Nagel, age 76 of Little Rock, IA, formerly of Rock Rapids, IA died on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley, IA.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Friday, May 18th at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, IA, with Marcus Ditsworth officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in Rock Rapids.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 17th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

Dixon Lee Nagel was born December 11, 1935 at his parents’ home in Rock Rapids, Iowa, the son of John J. and Alma (Siebsen) Nagel. He attended the community schools and graduated from Rock Rapids High School in 1955. He also worked for Phil Hess in the bakery. He entered the U.S. Navy for a short while, receiving a medical discharge in 1956. He returned to Rock Rapids and was united in marriage to Nancy Lea Morgan on August 13, 1960. He rejoined the bakery until 1962 when he and Nancy moved to Spirit Lake, IA where he worked for Glen’s Bake Shop. He then purchased the Bakery in Houston, MN. In 1970 he returned to Rock Rapids and worked for Lambert Van Olst and later Dave Dreesman at Golden Crust Bakery in Rock Rapids. In 1996 Dixon suffered a stroke and soon after was diagnosed with sarcoidosis of the lungs.

Dixon enjoyed fishing, and camping at Marble Beach, Newton Hills, Lake Pahoja, and especially Island Park. He had several dogs through the years and adored each of them. He loved old cars and was a charter member of the car club Accelerators of Rock Rapids.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy Nagel of Little Rock, IA; five children, Clark (Tammy) Nagel of Davenport, IA, Monday (Dan) Durrence of Rock Rapids, IA, Shannon “Tuzz” (Sheila) Nagel of George, IA, Heather (Don) Blom of Inwood, IA and Cory (Rita) Nagel of George, IA; thirteen grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alma Nagel; one brother, Leo Nagel; and two sisters, Florence Menage and Isabel Ross.

Alyssa Marie Zamarron

Alyssa Marie Zamarron, age 10 of Worthington, MN passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at the Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD, following injuries sustained in an accident.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the First Baptist Church, rural George, IA, with Reverend Stephen May officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 16th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Sibley.

Alyssa Marie Zamarron was born on May 22, 2001, the daughter of Annamarie Villanueva and Robert Zamarron in Phoenix, AZ. Alyssa lived with her parents in Arizona for a time then moved to Sibley, IA, and attended school there until 2011. She had most recently been living in Worthington, MN and attending the fourth grade at the Worthington Elementary School. She attended church at the First Baptist Church in George, IA. However, she had accepted God into her heart and was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Sibley, IA. She always loved singing at church, and actively went to TeamKids, Awanas, and Vacation Bible School. Alyssa enjoyed playing the violin in band and was looking forward to playing the clarinet next year. She also was very active in sports and loved art, singing, dancing and fishing. Alyssa loved her brothers Gauge and Robert, and sister Rihanna very much. She was her momma’s little helper, and best friend. Her favorite thing to do while at Grandpa and Grandma’s house was to play catch with the football and softball. She always had good sportsmanship while playing, she never had a frown. She was a very outgoing young girl, and always had a pretty smile to greet you with.

She is survived by her Mother, Annamarie Villanueva of Worthington, MN and her Father, Robert Zamarron of Glendale, AZ. Her two brothers Gauge Villanueva, and Robert Zamarron, Jr. and sister Rihanna Ramirez, who currently reside with Annamarie in Worthington, MN. Nanny Kim and Poppy Brad Scoplitte, Grandpa Ernie and Grandma Ramona Villanueva, Nana Bertha Zamarron, Antie Amanda and Uncle Remick Martinez, Aunt Summer Scoplitte and Uncle Jeremy Gonzales, Uncle Brad and Aunt Michelle Scoplitte, Antie Gloria and Uncles Eddie, Ernie and Isaac Villanueva, Uncle Randy Kruse, Uncle Rodney and Aunt Laura Kruse, Uncle Ryan and Aunt Lori Kruse, Uncle Jon and Aunt Rhonda Wade, Aunt Jan and Uncle Gary Geisler, Aunt Cindy Sincher, Aunt Barb Knaggs, Aunt Debbie and Uncle Bob Buehring, Uncles Gordo and Flaco Zamarron, Tia Angela. Ellen Smit

Mrs. Ellen Smit, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Sunday, May 13, 2012, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, May 16, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull.  The Rev. Carl Klompien will officiate.  Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the church.

Ellen was born on March 1, 1930, in Hull, the daughter of Peter and Nellie (Langstraat) Cuperus. She was raised at Hull, where she graduated from the Christian School.

On December 7, 1949, she married Adrian Van Hofwegen in Hull. They made their home mostly in Colton, South Dakota. Sometime later, that marriage ended.

On November 19, 1973, she married Egbert Bonestroo in Hull. They made their home in Hull. Egbert passed away on November 18, 1986, in Sioux Center.

On January 29, 1993, she married Albert Blom in Nashua. They made their home in Worthington, Minnesota, and Hull. “Al” passed away on January 14, 1999, in Rock Valley.

On March 14, 2003, she married Anthony J. Smit in Hull. They made their home in Hull.

In January of 2012, Mrs. Smit became a resident of Royale Meadows.

Ellen was employed in a variety of occupations but was always also a homemaker.

She was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church.

She enjoyed quilting and donated many quilts to fundraisers, especially for schools.

Survivors include her husband of nine years, Anthony; four children and their spouses, Noella and Edwin Haveman, of Hull; Peter and Sharleen Van Hofwegen, of Colton; Bonnie and Philip De Stigter, of Sioux Center; and LuAnn and Eldon De Wild, of Hull; eight step-children and their spouses, Elaine De Leeuw, of Sioux Center; Howard and LaJean Bonestroo, of Doon; Arlan and Glenda Bonestroo and David and Diane Bonestroo, all of Hull; Marcene Trudell, of Kuna, Idaho; James and Carol Smit, of Omaha, Nebraska; Mary and Don Krommendyk, of Hull; and Marlys and Jerry De Groot, of Alton; fourteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Anderson, of Hull; and Nelvina Matthews, of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho; and a brother, Peter Cuperus, of George.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacey Van Hofwegen; and two brothers, Elmer and Calvin Cuperus.

Memorials will be directed to the Sioux Center Home Health and Hospice.

Willard Meyer

Willard Meyer, age 85, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Memorial Services will be Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at 1:30 P.M. at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. David Brower officiating. Graveside Services will be Wednesday, at 12:30 P.M. at East Lawn Cemetery, prior to the Memorial Service.

Visitation will be Tuesday, from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.

Willard Meyer was born on May 18, 1926 in Sheldon, Iowa. He was the son of Gerrit and Catharina (Van Bochove) Meyer. He lived his youth in rural Sheldon where he attended Lynn Township #1 Country School in Sioux County.

Willard was united in marriage to Nellie Janet Engeltjes of Sheldon, Iowa on February 21, 1951 in Sheldon. They lived in rural Sheldon, Primghar, and rural Hartley before moving back to rural Sheldon where they farmed and milked cows. Willard loved to give the grandchildren rides on tractors. Willard sold seed corn for Sar and Fontanelle for many years. He also enjoyed showing ears of corn at the Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa and watching his grandchildren show calves at local calf shows. Willard retired from farming in 1999. He was employed by Northwest Iowa Landfill, retiring in 2008.

Willard and Nellie enjoyed traveling to the Black Hills, Michigan to visit family, and Avoca, Iowa for the Music Fest. In the last years they enjoyed watching their children and grandchildren participate in mini-rod tractor pulls in Northwest Iowa. He also enjoyed his friendship and daily visits with Gil DeGoei.

Willard will be remembered as a loving, quiet and reserved person.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church in Sheldon.

On December 21, 2010, Nellie and Willard entered Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon. Nellie passed away on March 4, 2011. Willard passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Those left to cherish his memories are his children: Gary and Judy Meyer of Granville, IA, Loren Meyer of Sheldon, IA, Dwayne Meyer of Spencer, IA, Charlyn and Brian Woelber of Sheldon, IA; 7 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters: Anna and Henry Boender of Sibley, IA, Alice and Peter Faber of Grand Rapids, MI, Nelvina and Keith Larson of Grand Rapids, MI, and Joan Koel of Primghar, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother and sister-in-law: Edward and Marion Meyer; one sister and brother-in-law: Wilma and Alvin Van Kley; and one brother-in-law: Julius Koel.

Marjorie Brockshus

Marjorie Brockshus, age 87, of Ocheyedan, Iowa passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Funeral Services will be Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at Zion Lutheran Church Horton Township, Ocheyedan, Iowa. Rev. Russell Andersen officiating. Burial in Zion Lutheran Cemetery Horton Township, Ocheyedan, Iowa.

Visitation will be Wednesday, May 16, from Noon to 8:00 P.M. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Chapel in Ocheyedan.

Marjorie Muriel Brockshus was born on December 3, 1924 in Rushmore, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Herman Henry and Lena (Rosenberg) Hembd. She lived her youth in Rushmore and was baptized and confirmed in her faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rushmore. Marjorie attended school in Sibley, Iowa and graduated from Ocheyedan High School in Ocheyedan, Iowa in 1942. She attended Teacher College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

She was united in marriage to John Brockshus of May City, Iowa on November 3, 1946 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Ocheyedan. They lived on a farm north of Ocheyedan. John passed away on December 1, 2003.

Marjorie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church Horton Township, Ocheyedan, Iowa where she was active in LWML. She was a faithful supporter of Camp Okoboji and other mission projects. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary.

Marjorie enjoyed quilting, fixing puzzles, solving crossword puzzles and Sudoku.

She passed away on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children: Darlene and Marvin Sopko of Sioux Falls, SD, Roger and Rita Brockshus of Spirit Lake, IA, Glen and Mary Brockshus of Red Oak, IA, Carol and Ross Brownson of St. Louis, MO, Bruce and Susan Brockshus of Ocheyedan, IA; daughter-in-law: Peg and Curt Van Kley of Sibley, IA; 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; one sister: Betty and Orville Taylor of Hartley, IA; 3 sisters-in-law: Marcella Hembd of Ocheyedan, IA, Alice Brockshus of Hartley, IA, Erna Kooistra of Sheldon, IA; 2 brothers-in-law: Herbert and Marlene Brockshus of Ocheyedan, IA, Albert Groff of Hartley, IA.

Rudy Petersen

Rudy Petersen, age 91 of Hartley, IA passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, IA on Tuesday, May 8, 2012.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 12th at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley.  Burial will be at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley, IA.  Rev. David Ericksen will be officiating.

Visitation will be at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, May 11th starting at 2:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the Hartley Funeral Home Chapel in Hartley, IA.

Rudolph (Rudy) Henry Petersen, the son of Julius and Hilda (Stephen) Petersen, was born July 23, 1920, in Royal, IA. He graduated from Hartley High School with the class of 1938. On October 13, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served 33 months in the South Pacific Islands with the B Company 3rd Corps Signal Battalion.

He was united in marriage to Maxine A. McClary on February 12, 1949. Following their marriage, they farmed in the Hartley area until their retirement in 1992.

Farming was deeply rooted in Rudy’s heart, and he loved caring for the land. He also enjoyed gardening, watching Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs baseball games and playing cards with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Hartley. He passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley on May 8, 2012, having reached the age of 91.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Linda Petersen and Jan Hall; two brothers, Ray Petersen and Rex Petersen.

Survivors include his wife Maxine; two daughters, Peg (Jim) Riddle and Carol Petersen (Clayton Ahsbahs); one son, Steve Petersen (Kelley Fiedler); a son-in-law, Dan Hall; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Bobolz, and brother, Emory (Elsin) Petersen; other relatives and many friends.
