Vera De Beer

Vera R. De Beer age 92 of Rock Rapids, IA died Monday, September 3, 2012 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral service will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, Sept. 6th at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA, with Rev. Dan Haggar officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Reformed Cemetery near Ellsworth, MN.

Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 5th from 2:00 to 8:00 PM, with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at First Reformed Church of Rock Rapids, IA.

Vera Rose Wiertzema was born on March 9, 1920 in Midland Township, Lyon County, the daughter of Henry and Johanna (Aeilts) Wiertzema. As a youth she was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Reformed Church near Ellsworth, MN. In 1964 she joined the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA. She attended country school in Midland Township.

On May 1, 1943 Vera was united in marriage to William “Bill” De Beer in North Carolina. While Bill was stationed in the U.S. Army Vera was employed by Merrill Pioneer Hospital as a laundress. She remained there for thirty years. Vera was an active member of the First Reformed Church. She was a willing volunteer and member of the Ladies Circle and RCWM. In April of 2000 Vera’s husband, Bill died after 57 years of marriage. Vera remained active through the years with church events and other community activities. She enjoyed visiting with friends and family over a cup of coffee. On May 27, 2007, Vera became a resident of Lyon Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rock Rapids, IA. This past Monday, September 03, 2012 Vera died there at the age of ninety-two.

Vera is survived by two brothers, Verdell (Glenda) Wiertzema of Bigelow, MN and Verdean “Sam” (Joan) Wiertzema of Boyden, IA; and sisters-in-law, Fidelas Wiertzema of Sheldon, IA, Ida De Beer of Ellsworth, MN and Audrey De Beer of Rock Rapids, IA; along with many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Vera in death were her parents, husband, Bill and two brothers, Verdus and Vernon Wiertzema.

Marvel Blum

Marvel Blum, age 80 of George, IA, died Monday, September 3, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Center in George, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday September 7, 2012 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, IA with Rev. Dale Lint officiating.  Burial will follow at the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George, IA.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 2:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of George.

Wallace Van Roekel

Wallace Van Roekel age 75 of Alvord, IA died Sunday, September 02, 2012 at the Lyon Manor Nursing & Rehab Center in Rock Rapids, IA.

Memorial service will be 2:00 PM Thursday, September 6th at Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord, IA, with Pastor Corilee Boer officiating.  Burial will follow at Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Alvord.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 5th from 2-8 PM with the family present from 6-8 PM at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.


Doug Winkel

Doug Winkel age 64 of Lake Park and formerly of Ashton passed away on Sat. September 1.

There will be a informal gathering of the Celebration of Doug’s Life at Arrowood in Okoboji IA in the Peddle Beach Room on Saturday Sept. 8th from 2-4 come join the family in remembering Doug’s life.

Douglas James Winkel, son of John Russell(Perry) and Bertha (Boyd) Winkel was born August 3, 1948, in Ashton, Ia. He attended school in Sibley, where he graduated from high school in 1966. He attended the body fender program at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis after graduating.

In his youth, he enjoyed building go carts with his friends. He loved cars, working on their engines, doing body work and just plain driving them. In his lifetime, he worked building steel bins, helping lay brick and block, working for several car dealerships, as a Schwan’s salesman and driving truck.

One of his favorite pastimes was barbequing. He also enjoyed tinkering with machines and engines. He was a big Elvis fan. Doug had a very charismatic personality and could visit with anyone. He had a sharp and witty sense of humor.

In 2005, Doug suffered a stroke and lived the last seven years at Lake Park Care Center, where he enjoyed teasing the staff and watching game shows. He passed away September 1, at the age of 64 years, after being diagnosed with cancer a month earlier.

He was preceded in death by his parents, JR and Bertha Winkel. He is remembered by his wife Rosie; his sons, Brian(Jacqui) and their children, Maya and Elijah, Waterloo, Ia, Jed(Karey) and their children, Dani and Cooper, Spirit Lake, Ia, and Nathan, Iowa City, Ia; a brother, Steve(Kay) Winkel , Ashton Ia; along with nephews, cousins and friends.

A Celebration of Doug’s Life will be held Saturday, from 2:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M. at Arrowwood Resort in the Pebble Beach Room. The Schuchert Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.


Alice Van Heuvelen

Alice Van Heuvelen, age 95, of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Sanford Senior Care in Sheldon.

Funeral Services will be Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at 10:30 A.M. at the First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Rev. David Brower officiating. Burial in East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation will be Tuesday, September 4, from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.

Johanna Sohl

Mrs. Johanna Sohl, age 94, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 1, at 11:00am, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull.  The Rev. Robert Gordon will officiate.  Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
