Sheldon Sweeps Sibley Ocheyedan

Sheldon Orabs 2Sibley Iowa — The Sheldon Orabs got a road sweep over Sibley Ocheyedan in Siouxland Conference Basketball Friday night. The Orabs took the girls game 49-47 and followed with a 59-46 in the boys game.

A pair of free throws by Orab senior Sydney Iedema with 10 seconds left was the difference in the girls game. Iedema  led all scorers with 20 points. Kayla Van Meeteren hit 4 three-point buckets  on the way to an 18 point night from the outside. The Generals were led by Britta Harberts with 12 points and Megan Grimes with 9.

Sibley Ocheyedan took a 12-10 first quarter lead with the Orabs moving in front 26-24 at the half and remained in front 39-33 at the end of the third quarter on route to the win. Sheldon moves to 3-9 for the year and 2-8 in the conference. Sibley Ocheyedan is 2-10 for the season and 0-10 in the conference.

 

In the boys game Sheldon led at all the breaks 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, 25-21 at the half and 44-32 after the third quarter. The Orabs would go on to win it 59-46.

Sheldon got a game high 26 points from Kyle Boerhave and 9 from Jayden Kleinhesselink. The Generals had two players in double figures as well with Preston Marco leading the way with 14 followed by Grant Brouwer with 12. Sheldon improves to 5-6 on the year and 5-4 in the Siouxland. The Generals are 2-9 for the year and 1-8 in the conference.

Up next for Sheldon will be a non-conference doubleheader at home with Spencer Tuesday night. Sibley Ocheyedan will play host to Rock Valley for a conference doubleheader.


2016 FIFTH Iowa Girls’ High School Basketball Rankings

ighsauDes Moines Iowa — The latest Iowa Girls High School Basketball Rankings are out and defending 2A Champion Unity Christian continues to hold down the top spot in the poll. Western is in the five spot with Okoboji ranked number 6. Sioux Center is ranked 6th in 3A with Cherokee and Spirit Lake four and five respectively.

2016 & 2017 Preliminary Football Classifications

football 1Boone Iowa — District assignments for the next two years for Iowa High School Football should be out later this month. Noticeable changes did happen in the Iowa High School Football classifications in Class A through 4A.

In the immediate area, Spirit Lake jumped up to Class 3A, while Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley moved to Class 2A. Also in the area, Okoboji moved down to Class 1A. Both Okoboji and Spirit Lake were in Class 2A District 1. Other teams in the District the past two years have included Sheldon, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock, Cherokee, Sioux Center and MOC-Floyd Valley. All of those teams remained in 2A.

Weekly DNR Fishing Report

Iowa DNRSpirit Lake, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issues a weekly fishing report on Thursdays in an effort to provide the latest information heading into the weekend. The weekly fishing report is compiled from information gathered from local bait shops, angler creel surveys, and county and state parks staff. For more information contact the Spirit Lake fish Hatchery at 712-336-1840.

NORTHWEST

Clear Lake

Clear Lake had about 5 inches of ice on the little lake on January 2. The aerators have been turned on; signs at accesses show the locations. Use caution and check ice depth often when crossing the ice. Yellow Bass – Excellent: Angling activity has been high this past weekend and many are taking a full bucket home. Move often if not catching fish; fish 8-12 feet of water and move till finding schools. Walleye – Fair: No reports of any keepers yet; try Farmers beach or the Baptist Camp area for some active walleye. Early ice is the better time of the year to try for walleye. Crappie – Good: Crappie have been caught mixed in with some of the yellow bass catches in 8-12 feet of water but the better locations are in the deeper 15-24 feet holes early morning or evening (3-8 p.m.)

Big Spirit Lake

Ice conditions: 6-7 inches of ice covered with snow and slush. Ice conditions varied. Use caution while on the ice. Yellow Perch – Slow: A few perch have been caught in front of the pump house.

East Okoboji Lake

Ice condition: 7 inches of ice covered with snow and slush. Use caution while on the ice. Yellow Perch – Slow: A few perch on the south end of the lake. Yellow Bass – Slow: Some yellows are being caught north of the narrows

Minnewashta Lake

Ice conditions: 6-7 inches of ice covered with snow and slush. Use caution while on the ice.

Silver Lake (Dickinson)

Ice conditions: 4-5 inches of good ice with 2 inches of slush. Ice thickness varied. Use extreme caution during ice activities. The aeration system is in use. Yellow Perch – Slow: Anglers are picking up a few perch on the north end of the lake.

West Okoboji Lake

Ice conditions: The lake is completely ice covered. Reports of 3-5 inches of ice covered with snow and slush in Emerson, Millers, Smiths and the North bays. Use caution while on the ice. Bluegill – Slow: A few bluegills are being caught in the bays.


Horstman to Play Football/Basketball for NWC

Northwesstern logoOrange City, Iowa — Joey Horstman has signed a letter of intent to continue his football and basketball careers at Northwestern College next year.

Horstman is a 6’0” wide receiver/defensive back who played two years for the Western Christian High School football team. Horstman totaled 39 catches for 498 yards and five touchdowns in leading his team to a class 2A state runner-up finish with an 11-3 record in 2015. He also registered 16 tackles and one interception on defense while earning all-conference honors for the second consecutive year. As a junior, Horstman posted 12 catches for 237 yards and two touchdowns while leading his team to the state playoffs.

“We are excited to have Joey join the Red Raider football family,” commented head coach Matt McCarty. “He is an outstanding athlete and competitor. Joey has been coached well throughout his career and he will be a positive impact on our team and campus.”

A three-year letterwinner in basketball, Horstman averaged eight points and three assists in the Wolfpack to a 22-3 record and state tournament appearance as a junior. As a sophomore, Horstman was a starter and scored six points per game with 22 three-pointers for a team that finished 27-0 and won the class 2A state championship. An academic all-district selection and honor roll student, Horstman plans to major in accounting at Northwestern. He is the son of Mark and Cheryl.

“Joey is an outstanding athlete and teammate,” commented head coach Kris Korver. “He is a proven winner who has been coached well throughout his career. Joey can shoot the ball well and has good understanding of the game. We are excited to have Joey join our basketball program.”


2015-16 NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll (Jan. 5)

naia_logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. – Saint Xavier (Ill.) is No. 1 for the second-straight edition of the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday.

The Great Plains Athletic Conference and Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference leads all leagues with five teams represented each.

Morningside holds the active streak of being ranked in the Top 25 (117). College of the Ozarks’ streak of 110-straight is second. College of the Ozarks (2007-08), Morningside (2008-09) and Saint Francis (Ind.) (1999-00) are the only teams to go the entire season ranked No. 1.
