Northwestern #4 in GPAC Softball Preseason Poll

Northwestern logoThe 2014 GPAC Preseason Coaches Poll is out. Hastings tops the rankings with 6 first place votes, Morningside in 2nd place with 4, and Midland in 3rd with 1 first place vote. Northwestern was ranked 4th with 73 points, just 2 points behind Midland, and Dordt was ranked 10th

Northwestern, under the direction of head coach Chris Nachtigall, returns nine letter winners from a 2013 team that finished tied with Midland for third in the GPAC at 13-7, 26-22 overall.

Points were assigned on a 10-1 basis and coaches’ could not vote for their own team.

The GPAC softball season will consist of 20 games (10 doubleheaders) and conclude with the GPAC Postseason Tournament on May 1-3 at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings, Nebraska.

Orabs Split Conference Basketball Doubleheader With Sibley Ocheyedan

basketballSheldon and Sibley Ocheyedan split a conference basketball doubleheader in Sibley Friday night. The girls game went to the Generals 51-44 with the Orabs taking the boys game 68-41.

In the girls game Sheldon led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter and were up 24-22 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter a three pointer by Michaela Wolter put the Generals up 35-32 as they went on to win it 51-44.

Sibley Ocheyedan had two players in double figures led by Alyssa Stofferan with 16 and Bridget Doeden with 12. Sheldon got 13 each from Emily Johnson and Mackenzie Radke. Johnson hit a trio of three pointers to go with 4-of-5 free throw shooting while Radke hit a pair of field goals, 1 three pointer and went 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

With the win Sibley Ocheyedan improves to 8-5 on the year and 7-4 in the conference while Sheldon stands at 9-5 on the year and 7-4 in the conference.

The boys game saw the Generals take a 12-7 lead with the Orabs going up 26-22 at halftime. A third quarter offensive outburst and solid defense saw the Orabs take a 50-30 third quarter lead as Matt Buenger hit a three as the quarter expired. Sheldon would ride that momentum through the fourth quarter for a 68-41 win.

Sheldon got a game high 21 points from Dylan Ennema. He hit 4 field goals, a trio of three pointers and went 2-of-2 from the line. Ian Jongewaard and Collin Wolthuizen added 11 points each.

Ty Hanna led the Generals with 14 points. He knocked down a trio of threes to go with a field goal and 3-of-3 free throw shooting.

With the win Sheldon improves to 4-8 on the year and 2-8 in the conference. The Generals move to 0-10 for the season.
