Boyden Hull Rock Valley Falls To Sioux Center

The Sioux Center Warriors defeated the Boyden Hull Rock Valley Nighthawks 19-0 in the district opener at Open Space Park in Sioux Center.

Sioux Center and Boyden Hull Rock Valley started out the game trading possessions resulting in a 0-0 score until late in the 1st half.  The Nighthawks Andrew Van Ginkel threw an interception to defensive back Andrew O’Donnell.  The Warriors took advantage of the good field position on the Nighthawks 45 and scored 1:22 later on an Andrew O’Donnell 17 yard quarterback keeper.  The missed extra point made the score 6-0 with 1:35 left in the first half.

Sioux Center followed that score in the 3rd quarter with another O’Donnell score, this time on a run of 31 yards.  The three play 43 yard drive took 1:28 off the clock, and after the failed two point conversion, the Warriors led 12-0 with 2:42 left in the 3rd quarter.

After Chris Borchers of the Warriors intercepted a Van Ginkel pass in the end zone, the Warriors drove the ball 80 yards and ate 6:17 off the game clock.  Scoring on a 1 yard O’Donnell keeper, the Warriors increased the lead to 19-0.  The game would end a few unsuccessful drives later with the same score.

Boyden Hull Rock Valley falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the district and will host Unity Christian in Hull next week.  Sioux Center improved to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the district. They will face South O’Brien in Paullina in non district action.

Orabs Open District Football Schedule With Win Over Unity

Orab Football Team 2013The Sheldon Orabs opened the district football schedule at home with a 68-23 win over Unity Christian.

Following a partially blocked punt and Hunter McDonald return to the Unity 24 Matt Buenger found McDonald on the slant for a 24 yard touchdown pass. Trevor Mayer’s extra point was good and Sheldon had the early lead with 7:17 to go in the first quarter.

The Knights answered with a 73 yard touchdown pass from Arie Hoekstra to Cody Gradert. Travis Viet added the extra point and the game was tied at 7-7 with 6:20 left in the first quarter.

Sheldon went on a 74 yard drive capped by a Hunter McDonald 8 yard touchdown run. A bad snap on the extra point left the Orabs in front 13-7 with 5:09 to go in the first quarter.

Sheldon got on the board again as Matt Buenger returned a punt 72 yards for the score. The kick was good and the Orabs led 20-7 with 3:20 to go in the first quarter.

An Arie Hoekstra interception set the Knights up at the Sheldon 39 and Hoekstra found Cody Gradert for the second time for the 39 yard score. The kick was blocked but the Knights were within 20-13.

The next two scores belonged to Sheldon as the Orabs took a 34-13 lead late in the second quarter. The first was a 16 yard McDonald touchdown run and the second a 1 yard score from Logan Otis.

An interception by Mitchell Post set Unity up at the Sheldon 15 yard line and Travis Viet closed out the drive with a 21 yard field goal that made it 34-16 with: 17 seconds left in the half.

Following the kickoff Sheldon took over with: 05 seconds to play and McDonald found Garrett Lang for a 71 yard touchdown off a halfback pass down the middle. With time expiring in the half Lang was able to break away and get into the end zone for the score. Trevor Mayer added the extra point that put Sheldon up 41-16 at halftime.

Sheldon took the opening kickoff and went on a 61 yard scoring drive with McDonald scoring from a yard out as Sheldon moved in front 48-16.

Tanner Hulstein closed out the Unity scoring with a 75 yard touchdown run off a quarterback draw. Thomas Weidauer added the point after and the Orab lead was 48-23 with 6:45 to go in the third quarter.

A trio of Sheldon scores would follow with Hunter McDonald scoring on a 30 yard run late in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Tanner Whitsell scored from 5 yards out and Matt Buenger would break loose for a 61 yard touchdown run that helped push the final to 68-23 following Trevor Mayer’s extra point.

With the win Sheldon moves to 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the district. Unity falls to 0-3 on the year and 0-1 in the district.

Next Friday Sheldon will be on the road to Cherokee while Unity travels to Hesla Field in Hull for a matchup with Boyden Hull Rock Valley.

Top Ranked Orabs Open With 3-0 Win

Orab-LogoThe Sheldon Orab Volleyball Team opened the Siouxland Conference schedule with a 3-0 home win over Okoboji Thursday night. The set scores were 25-8, 25-10 and 25-8.

Allie Jongewaard had 25 assists. Marti Vogel was the kills leader with 14. Jessica Van Beek added 10. MacKensey Radke had 3 solo blocks. At the serve receive line Van Beek went 25-of-25. Katlyn Holtrop was 18-of-18 and Vogel went 10-of-10.

With the win Sheldon improved to 11-0 on the season and will take part in the Spirit Lake Tournament on Saturday .
